Aramane Movie Review: Just Timepass!

By Raju Shanbhag

Box Office Verdict: Average (Source: SIFY)

Aramane What really makes a good entertaining Kannada film? Is it a good story, well known actors, good music and good production values? Debutant director Nagashekhar’s Aramane has all these. But unfortunately, it leaves you wanting for more even when the film ends, may be not in the way director intended.

First, let’s talk about the plus points. As always, there is Ganesh; the actor delivers another utterly likeable performance, even at the risk of being somewhat repetitive. He laughs and cries with utmost ease and makes your emotions change with his. And there is the inimitable Anant Nag, who just takes over the film with his powerhouse acting. The veteran actor is finally getting some roles that do justice to his enormous acting skills. Karibasayya shines in a role where he has enough scope to perform. New girl Roma is ok and very talented actors like Tara and Avinash have been reduced to making appearances in just 3-4 scenes in the film. And there are some real nice moments in the film which lets you watch the film without getting bored.

That’s what the film does at the most. It doesn’t bore you. It entertains you in parts. The film’s biggest drawback is its predictable storyline. Although there are some twists in the tale on offer, they are not enough to hold a dragging story and sagging interests of the audience for what seems to be an unnecessarily prolonged period.

But when it comes to direction, Nagashekhar can be another find for the Kannada industry. Although his direction skills may not match the skills of his more famous friends like Yogaraj Bhat and Suri, he makes a predictable story at least watchable. Of course, there was not much of unpredictability in Gaalipata either; but Yogaraj Bhat worked his magic throughout the film, helped by some lively dialogues and very good music. Aramane lacks in both these departments, and hence, the absence of a good story is always in your face throughout the film.

Although a story like Aramane needs songs, there are far too many of them in the film, irritating you to the core. You would have thanked the director if there were fewer songs in the film.

It’s not as if the film is bad. But we suggest you should not watch it with too much expectation. Just go to the theatre, get some popcorn, and enjoy two and half hours of Aramane. You may not remember each moment of the two and half hours you spent in the theatre, but mind you, it’s not completely forgettable either.

As long as there are serious detractors like Open ID, Golden Star Ganesh continues to thrive!!

Just watch out for him in BOMBAAT!! He is sure to rock with his new antics!! This man GANESH is a bundle of unrestrained energy!! Somehow he has held himself back from going full steam in ARAMANE, which affected the movie as well!! If he goes in full throttle, you can’t find an actor as appealing as this man, GOLDEN STAR GANESH!!

  5. Open ID on June 8th, 2008 7:28 am

    bla bla star – Ganesh

short talkies can’t be a hero at least for a considerable period of time. Even if directors use him for a longer period then fans will fade out because he is unbearable.

Future movies will prove his real strength.

    Bombaat
    Sangama

the downfall of ganesh which began with Aramane, will contine along with the upcoming movies as well.

Ganesh is back to same Tyagaraja character.
He is becoming stereotyped. Not sure why he is accepting the same role or kannada film directors are not giving different roles. Better he start looking at different roles.

yes you are right..Its not exactly a frame to frame copy, but the content/concept is copied and the hero character is modified to suit the image of Punit, which the power star has utilzed it very well :) and infact it is one of his best acting skills ever as a Hero

  26. Satish on May 6th, 2008 5:20 am

Milana was not remake of “Hum Dil De Chuke Hai Sanam”. It’s much different from that movie.

  27. yash on May 5th, 2008 11:03 pm

Offcourse Milana was a good movie..no doubt about.. But the difference between Milana and Aramane is – Milana is a remake of Hindi block buster “Hum Dil De Chuke Hai Sanam” where as Aramane is a swamake. Also a majort credit to Milana’s success goes to its well composed and choriagraphed songs(similar to Mungaaru Male).
So its not just about saying good or bad things about the movie. Its about apreciating or encouraging new comers to come out with such a simple and good narration or something creative. Kannada industry needs encouragement and support of Kannadigas atleast. It looks as if the kannada industry is still suffering from lack of support from all levels including personalities from film industry itself :) .

Anyway, not sure how it is going to do in the box office..But it is a movie that belongs to list of good movies made in kannada..

  28. Nayana on May 4th, 2008 3:10 pm

Aramane is a pseudo-emotional movie.. I’m really surprised that some people are praising it so intensly. It’d have been understandable if there was a dearth of well made emotional movies in Kannada. There is no dearth of good emotional movies in Kannada like the last year’s Puneeth starrer smash hit, Milana. Aramane is full of crap.

  29. Ravi on May 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm

    Movie tumba chennagide…
It will b a superhit movie..I am 100% sure..Ella kannadigaru omme nodle beku!
There is only one weak point in the movie..I.e. there should have been one strong reason for Ganesh to help Ananth Nag’s Family which isn’t reflecting in the movie…

  30. yash on May 2nd, 2008 6:53 am

In that case go and watch Satya Harsishandra color version :)

  31. Satish on May 2nd, 2008 5:55 am

Come on, I wouldn’t take my kids to watch this movie as there are too many drinking scenes. In fact, as a family entertainer also, Aramane doesn’t rise beyond a mononous TV serial!

  32. yash on May 2nd, 2008 5:10 am

Also some one in thread mentioned that it is a remake of Bommarilu…FYI, it is not a remake of Bommarilu. The story line is compleely different..But i agree on one thing that some of the tunes are lifted from old hindi songs which i think is ok as long as they are mixed well with kanadda lyrics..

I am neither fan of Ganesh or Shivrajkumar or anyone..I just enjoy watching movies that too when a good kannada movie is made i love it..As a 100% kannadiga, i think we should say good things about the industry when they try to make good movies..If not interested in writing good things, atleast please stop abusing it..Bad movies are made everywhere even in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi etc…But those people never crib about it the way Kanndaigas crib about Kannada movies..

    Jai Karnataka..

  33. yash on May 2nd, 2008 4:50 am

I saw this movie and the movie is very good. it is a very well made movie and can be wateched with family and kids..Some of the songs are also catchy..Last but not the least great acting by both Ananthnag and Ganesh…Excellent direction for first a firt time director..Kudos to director Nagashekar

    worth watching…

  34. Anonymous on April 30th, 2008 2:47 pm

Pathra Bareyala song is haunting for ever. Kolle Nannanne song is also very good. I heard from my friend that the movie is very good especially the climax and Ananth Nag’s acting. I am watching it this weekend without fail. My friend came back from PVR today without getting a ticket for the night show.

  35. Anonymous on April 30th, 2008 2:45 pm

This movie is superb. The climax will make you cry. Ananth Nag and Ganesh are at their best. Do not miss this movie at any cost, if you want to watch a neat, cool family entertainer.

  36. raj on April 30th, 2008 1:21 pm

As far as i know only u people are crying and kannada as always is rocking. And by the way u talk i can understand that u people are fans of other movies. And also i can understand how much u are worried about the society. Thank you for your concern. And by the way did cheluvina chitara had any effect. Only stupid peoples like u can get effected by the things shown on big screen. And one should do what he does best no matter whether its crying or laughing…

  37. Rashmi on April 30th, 2008 10:08 am

Yes Smitha, I agree with you.. It’s ironical that the actor Ganesh who shot to fame for his comedy talent is being turned into a crying baby by this half-wit directors!
As for as the boozing is concerned, someday Vijay Malya will pick Suri and Nagshekhar to be the brand ambassador for his KF! These idiots are prmoting the notion that boozing is the only way to react to any problem in life!

  38. Smitha on April 30th, 2008 8:11 am

Hey Raj Baby!! Atleast in this movie, kannada is not rocking, it’s crying !!!!!!!!

  39. raj on April 30th, 2008 7:07 am

Smitha u r great yar. Women with man hood. Sorry to hear this from a woman. When u loose ur loved ones only then u will understand the problem (manhood). Anyway its just a movie with the soft hearted people. So they cry for little things. And more over, this is the character which challenged ganesh and also his character here is different from his other movies. And drinking in inthi nina preethiya did not make problem, but this movie irritated mr. anonymous. Stupidity at its best…

    kannada rocks….

    karnataka rocks…

  40. Smitha on April 29th, 2008 6:31 pm

Yes, all the characters in this movie are escapist cowards! None of them show the manhood(guts to face problems).. They cry for very small small reasons..

  41. Anonymous on April 29th, 2008 3:03 pm

this film is an average…story is not good..music is OK..huge disappointment for Ganesh Fans..Please try to change stories for atleast forthcoming movies instead of the same SACRIFICE ONE FOR THE OTHER….and moreover the scenes of drunkards…drinking for depression showing in PUBLIC…what a publicity…probably this may be the first super flop for GANESH

Aramane is not a remake of any movie… From a reliable source its found that it is inspired by a Bharatiraja’s tamil movie… Except Kolle …… n Patra bareyala. none of the songs r good. The credit should go to lyricist KAVIRAJ who is a close freind of mine…. pl watch the movie n enjoy.

  48. Satish on April 24th, 2008 5:09 am

Heroes with bad looks is not only restricted to Kannada. It’s there in entire South India. Except Telugu of course where they have superstars like Mahesh Babu, Sidharth, Pavan Kalyan who are damn good looking. Actually compared to Tamil, Kannada heroes are better.
Thank god that atleast most of the heroines(Rekha, Pooja Gandhi, Prema, Sudharani, Ramya, Jennifer) are good looking unlike in the past where ugly heroines like Manjula, Kalpana, ruled the kananda industry!!!

  49. Anonymous on April 24th, 2008 4:28 am

How about Yogesh of Nanda Loves Nandita ??? How come your hatred for kannada heroes spared him???

  50. Anonymous on April 24th, 2008 4:10 am

i dont like Ganesh, he is not fit to look like a hero. Prem (Jyothe Jyotheyali), Sudeep are the only good looking heroes we have in Kannada. Darshan is sick. Shivarajkumar looks like a chaprasi. Puneet should quit acting and start his granite business.

  51. Mahesh on April 21st, 2008 11:18 am

The kannada film industry scenario is bit different post-mungaru male/Duniya;it’s in transition phase now. Milana was a very good movie. Inthi Ninna Preethiya’s technical qualities were superb and Aramane’s screen shots also look good. Music directors like Emil(Nanda loves Naditha) have emerged out of nowhere. Change and growth do take time. Copying is everywhere. Even in hindi, almost all the hit songs of Ilayaraja were copied by Anand milind, Anu malik..etc. Telugu & Tamil movies copy from english movies. It’s everywhere.

  52. Anonymous on April 21st, 2008 10:59 am

Gurukiran is a copy cat music director, he copies music from ARR, some good hindi and blend it and makes some new music out of it. he is not having his own tune and music.
After Mungaru Male i started listing to new kannada songs. Old Dr. Rajkumars’ songs are very very good compared to copied songs.
though Movie songs like Mungaru Male, Gaalipata, Duniya, Gooli, Accident, Krishna, Accident etc are well composed in original and really feel proud to listen original kannada songs.
But some movie and Music Directors’ just copy movie and music from Telegu and Tamil and wan’t to make quick money. i feel very bad to kannada film Industry.
Why can’t people from Kannada Film industry come up with new and original stories and music so that others can copy.
During 70’s the Kannada Film industry was in boom and what happening now.
I was very much inspired by Mungaru Male(after watching) and felt proud to say that flim line is changing, but recently again the old story of copying.

You guys have given such a harsh review for Meravanige songs. Come on now, V. Manohar isn’t that bad a music director, is he?

  58. Mahesh V on April 18th, 2008 1:17 pm

Nagashekhar would be overwhelmed with joy if he sees this comment that somebody is showing so much trust on him even before his first movie is released! I hope your gut beliefs would come true as if it happens, Kannada industry would get one more good director. Anyway it’s difficult to predict the fate of the movie before its release. Everybody had expected that Inthi Ninna Preethiya would become a massive hit. But it bombed at box office.
Music of Aramane is just ok, not exceptional. It’d be a hit if and only if the movie succeds in the box office too!

  59. Anonymous on April 18th, 2008 11:44 am

This movie is not a remake!! Please do not post craps if you don’t have information, because you will be putting down the efforts of somebody with your mindlessness!!

Coming back to songs.. Hold on for a few days till the movie releases.. You will see the real magic of ARAMANE songs from then onwards..

PATRA BAREYALA is a sure fire chart buster .. Nanagu Ninagu is slowly catching up after the songs are getting aired in TV channells.. But, the song which will propel this album before the movie release is ‘KOLLE NANANNE’.. This is a peppy and lively number.. Probably, if somebody like Shankar Mahadevan had sung it, the song would have gainee much more popularity.. Anyhow, this song is going to be a HIT before the movie hitting the theatres.. The chorus in the song is too good..

Other songs like ‘Nagu Nagu’ and ‘Nannad edeyali’ are also good, but seem to be more of situational songs and might gain popularity after the movie release..

  60. ashoka on April 17th, 2008 11:02 pm

  66. chandru on April 10th, 2008 3:16 am

Ganesh has found a lot of success with remakes. Hudugata was remake of Dil Hain Ki Manata Nahin and CHeluvina Chittara was remake of Tamil hit Kaadhal. Remake is not so bad as long as this new version is better than the original(like Apthmitra).
    Yup, songs are mediocre.

  67. Rami on April 10th, 2008 3:01 am

Oh no not again!!! i thought kannada movies were starting to get streamlined with some original scripts…but they have fallen back to remakes is it?? off late movies like gaalipata, milana, accident, duniya have made audiences look at kannada cinema…i’m sick of these remakes..it’s just pure waste of money doing remakes.i was not so impressed with Aramane songs…

  68. Varun on April 8th, 2008 11:05 am

    i agree to rajeev.,

  69. Anonymous on April 8th, 2008 9:03 am

Yes Rajeev, Ghajini is a remake of an english movie called “Memento”. Sarkar was a junk movie and it was heavily influenced by Godfather and Maniratnam’s Naayagan.

  70. rajeev on April 8th, 2008 8:43 am

Even i saw the promos and according to me its a straight movie and not a remake movie of bomarilu (or other)and i bet on this. Anyone has the guts to bet on it. There is no point in calling all the movies as a remake and more over if one gets inspired by other movies whats wrong in it. In that way lot of movies in various languages can be called remake (like SARKAR, ANKAHEE, GHAJINI etc.). I hope u guys got the point. The same thing holds good for the music also. what do you say???

  71. Anonymous on April 7th, 2008 2:56 pm

Saw its promos on TV.. It doesn’t look like its remake of Bommarillu.

  72. chandru on April 5th, 2008 5:32 am

Patra Bareyala song is good! Nanagu Ninagu song is also ok song. But the top downloaded song happens to be Kolle Nannanne with 1189 downloads! patra bareyala has been downloaded by 1096 people and Nanagu Ninagu has been downloaded by 1127 people so far.

  73. Anonymous on April 1st, 2008 2:53 pm

Not only songs, even the movie is a copy of a telugu hit Bommarillu. Ganesh can play Sidharth’s role. But I wish they had casted Genelia instead of this Roma.. Genelia had performed superbly in Bommarillu.

  74. Anonymous on March 31st, 2008 6:09 am

Songs are not up to the hype it had created and most of the songs are copied. Gurukiran has displayed his copy skills rather than his music skills.
“Kolle nannanne” song is copy of a song called “sayyoni” from Junoon
“Upahi” is a copy of a telugu song “Classroomlo tapassu cheyuta” from Gulabi.
“nanna edeyali” reminds of “nannusire” song from cheluvina chittara and also reminds of Duniya songs as well..
