Bombat

August 9th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Bombaat The biggest movie of 2008, “Bombat” is scheduled to be released on 8th August 2008.  Most of the names associated with this movie are big names in Kannada movie industry. Rockline Venkatesh the Producer, Ganesh and Ramya as leading actors, D.Rajendra Babu as director, Mano Murthy as Music Composer. The starcast and crew is simply overwhelming. Incidently, the audio got released on 2nd July 2008 which also happened to be Ganesh’s birthday.

And finally to the delight of Ganesh fans, he is playing an action role in this movie. One can expect great fireworks with Ramya alongside him. She’s playing an NRI gal whereas Ganesh is playing a rowdy! Of course, doesn’t seem like an earth shatteringly different plot. But atleast, Ganesh is playing a different role! It’s interesting to see how Ganesh sheds off his sweety pie image. As for as Ramya is concerned, she doesn’t need to do anything extra to carry this role and has all those qualities inbuilt.

To some extent, the director D.Rajedra Babu is a factor of concern. His non-sentimental and non-remake films have turned out to be either big flops or average earners. His recent movie, Bindaas also made just an average business in the box office.

Cast/Crew:

Release Date: 8th August 2008
Director: D.Rajendra Babu
Producer: Rockline Venkatesh
Starring: Ganesh, and Ramya.
Music: Mano Murthy

No Roses, Only Guns!

Bombat Movie Review by Raju Shanbhag – raju@bellitere.com

It usually doesn’t happen this way. When Ganesh makes his first entry in a film, he usually does so with soothing music in the background and may be with a rose in his hand, with a smile and a body language that has given rise to many wannabe imitators. But this time, Ganesh makes his entry belting the living daylights out of some fake Ayyappa devotees. He jumps in slow motion in the air, not to spread his hands and romance the leading lady, but to land an almighty kick on the back of a junior artiste. Watch your steps Darshan, Ganesh is invading your fort!

Bombaat The purported image makeover of Ganesh is in full throttle in Bombat. And Ganesh has shown that be it the gentle, romancing peck on the heroines neck or simply breaking someone’s neck, he’s among the best in the business. The ruffled hair and the shrub like beard that gave him an image of an eternal Devdas now act as the perfect accomplices in making him look like a cute, slightly oversized goon. If the image makeover of Ganesh was the only purpose of Bombat, its bang on target as he displays his versatility like few other actors in Kannada filmdom could do. If the film had anything on its agenda; Haha!

Ganesh is the single binding factor in this movie. If it wasn’t for him, the fate of the film would have comfortably sunk even before the arrival of Ganesh Chaturthy, which is not very far away. When seasoned directors like D. Rajendra Babu pick up such outlandish script and even more melodramatic scenes for a movie, one is forced to ask some questions about his intentions about doing this movie. Scenes that defy logic and commonsense are as common as Sonu Nigam’s songs in Kannada movies. Picture this, a mafia don barges into the house of Police Commissioner and threatens him in broad daylight. The tough cop is shivering in his pants and he has not protection in his own house. Ganesh’s mother has confined herself to the comforts of the dark room for 14 years, unwilling to come out till her son becomes a cop, apparently because she was insulted as the wife of a street rowdy (that’s the main storyline, if any of you cared to know what the fuss is all about). Dons who are together for years start baying for each other’s blood within two days because our now-not-so-round Ganesha. Such scenes are galore throughout the whole movie and they test your patience to the core.

There are other ghastly scenes in the film that make Chandamama stories entirely believable in comparison. A police commissioner asking a simple goon to protect his daughter from the lusting son of a mafia don, Ganesh using Pepsi bottles to fight heavily armed goons…. Oh the list is never ending.

Although Ramya looks cute, she is like an injured player who sits in the side wings and watches the whole game without really involving herself in the procedures, except when she lands in snowy foreign locations with Ganesh to sing some songs; of course, only when he gets time from bashing up the goons. She has some role to play in the beginning of the film but as this bizarre story progresses, she sits in a corner and keeps getting wildly angry at everyone for no apparent reason; or wait, maybe she had a reason! Who wouldn’t be mad at the director for giving them such a role!

After roping in out-of-circulation heroines and expensive singers from Hindi, we have now started roping in even villains such as Mukesh Rishi and Rahul Dev who are like costly pieces of showcase items in a house. They are of no use to anyone, but everyone feels that they should have one, just to increase the status; ditto here! Actors like Guru Dutt and Adi Lokesh play sidekicks to these actors but ham louder than their Hindi counterparts.

On a whole, you can watch this movie if you like watching Ganesh getting tough and bashing some out of luck goons. But director D. Rajendra Babu is tougher on the screenplay; and unfortunately, that shows more prominently in Bombat than Ganesh’s machismo.

Delightful!

Bombat Music(Audio) Review by Raju Shanbhag

After a disappointing Madesha where composer Mano Murthy drew the first blood through his music even before the release of the film, he is back in his familiar terrain. Here, he works with familiar lyricists and singers and comes up with a highly likeable album. This one may not be as big as Mungaru Male or Milana; but who knows, the songs are good and when Ganesh renders them on screen with Ramya, anything is possible!

Bombaat Matinalli Helalarenu(Male Version): Here we are again. You can almost visualize Ganesh spreading his hands in his signature style and the camera flying above him in the slow motion. The melodious combination of Mano Murthy, lyricist Jayant Kaikini and Sonu Nigam is back with another beautiful sound track. But a word of caution for lyricist Jayant Kaikini; although his lyrics brought a fresh lease of air to the Kannad
a film industry, he seems to be getting taken over by his own skills. The phrases like “I am a love patient; Please don’t cure me” give you a sense of déjà vu where you can see torrential rains and high flying kites. It will be really nice if Jayant Kaikini can look beyond death, murder and pain while writing about love.

Strawberry Kenne: Lyricist Kaviraj writes about Strawberry cheeks and Cadbury hearts. Like those yummy but perishable confectionaries, this song may sound delicious, but has a perishable nature to it. Singer Rajesh Krishnan is surprisingly off the track and sounds in hurry to get a strawberry ice cream as soon as he can finish this song off. Supriya Ramakrishnayya looks interested in strawberries and chocolates; a typical girlie fascination you see!

I am so Bombat: Mano Murthy thinks Gurukiran is a Bombat singer and gives him another chance after Madesha. The song is the worst in this album and Gurukiran has done complete justice to it. Kaviraj joins in the fun with some intimidating lyrics.

Matinalli Helaballenu(Female Version): There is a line in this song where singer Shreya Goshal croons, “You should express your love properly.” We think the line is appropriate for the person who wrote the song! But tell you what, Jayant Kaikini almost redeems himself in this song, which is much more positive and doesn’t suggest that you should die loving. By the way, did we forget to tell that this is one of Shreya Ghoshal’s best songs in her Kannada career?

Chinna Hele Hegiruve: Another soulful number from Mano Murthy. He is almost infallible when he works with Sonu Nigam. The song is simple, easy on your ears and has a repeat quality. Shreya Ghoshal hums along beautifully in the song. Enjoy!

Chinna hele hegiruve song is outstanding,it is my no.1 favourite song in my life….
To the people who say songs are not nice:should not listen it,should feel it,should thoroughly concentrate on the lyrics n enjoy, not just simply playing the song and doing work or talking with someone….first of all hear kannada songs if u are very perfect in Kannada and dont give such rubbish comments like that..

Here, Ganesh`s acting, looks etc are not convincing. He is fit for films made for commics. Some how, MM has good photography
    songs & Pooja Gandhi` ups & down.
Ganesh`s Aramane was good in acting/screen play. Ananth too
    has given his good performances.
I wish, he shd be selective.

this rockline venkatesh has not produced a single good film in his career. always he is behind remakes. once in a decade he decides to produce a straight film but he gives the direction responsibilities to rajendra babu and other rejects. i hope atleast now he will learn something from his failures. it is really painful to see someone loosing money like this. olle avara sahavasa madabeku ee rockline. first he should remove his first name rockline(his wine bar name) and also dheera. coz he has become a big dheera in losing money. he continously fails in kannada, telugu and tamil. it means something is wrong with him. he should deeply introspect himself before continuing in this profession.

p.s:just a little rant from a concerned kannada film abhimani.

Hi I watched this movie just for Ganesh But, It is d worst movie by him till now. Full credit for giving him such a horrible role goes to D Rajendra Babu who even at his old age wants to direct films like this which has no story and no logic. Ganesh should also be blamed for chosing this kind of story as he has done a good job till now. Don’t watch this movie this is just waste of time and money.
Rajendra Babu Please stop giving such movies again

  14. Santosh on August 12th, 2008 10:10 am

hey, come on RK, you are asking bit too much; Ram Gopal Varma, and Farhan Akhtar!! I guess they wouldn't even be aware of Ganesh's existence! In Kannada also u wont get any directors of that caliber.. Suri & Prem seem to have that in them. But Suri is deep in depression and Prem is deeply immersed in Love!! Not possible, at least in near future..

  15. RK on August 12th, 2008 9:41 am

Complete disaster, the following points which I observed out of this movie, which I saw yesterday.
I never thought one day I would write a harsh review about Ganesh’s movie, but this one is yearning for it.

    1) Ganesh is hardly focussed on properly whenever he is on screen most of the time he fights (that is he has less screen time in the whole movie)
    2) Useless story, no meaning no end, no brains used by scriptwriter
    3) Camera work is the worst of its kind in any Ganesh’s movie.
    4) Ramya looks like couch potato througout the movie, also feels like she just wanted ot get rid of this movie and the contract she signed as soon as possible
    5) Ganesh’s talent completely wasted, if you can tolerate the movie lets say for 1 hour that is just because of of Ganesh’s sheer screen presence, otherwise the whole movie is a big disaster

Ganesh should never accept movies like this from such useless directors, he is very talneted but there are few people who could completely do injustice to his talent due their apathy towards quality filmmaking.

If Ganesh is reading this :) , please please do not act in useless adventures, they would spoil a goldenstar image you have made over last 7 movies. Just ignore director names and concentrate on good scripts. If you want to do action movies have directors who can direct movies like Satya, DON, or D.

^^ yes he is a naidu belonging to kamma caste. that is why he gave chance to jr ntr’s brother in his telugu remake of Abhi.

  17. Anonymous on August 11th, 2008 8:54 am

The producer Rockline venkatesh gives first preference to naidu people irrespective of their talent. That is why, talentless naidu’s like Rajendra babu and others always get first opportunity in his films. This naidu producer should learn to respect talent and not play caste politics in karnataka.

Bombat – one movie that could spoil the reputation of a actor like Ganesh…..A worst storyline and using well known faces like Ganesh and Ramya could not save the film….The climax is very boring – a person who has got a job as an SI can always bring in the police force and I don’t agree with a Commisioner has no security protection …. This really would create a negative image in the minds of the public!!! The introduction scene of Ganesh – the idea of terrorists carrying bombs and ammunitions in irumudi – that would give another way of carrying them – even if someone has thought so……may be the directors should restrain from showing this in the screens!!!And the worst part is that there is no police showing up in any of the scenes whenever Ganesh bashes up the anti-social elements…

I am sorry to diagree…This album is disappointing…what is the song”I am so Bombaat”…Easily the worst song of the year…

Ganesh is the aaasthi of all Kannadigas not just his so called fans…This kind of music will pull the song down as Ganesh films rely heavily on songs

  28. vinay on July 11th, 2008 6:15 pm

There are lot of songs copy from one language to other but BOMBAT songs is not like that.

Songs are VERY GOOD.It has more Melody and good number of beats.I think this songs will be remebered for its Melodies and GOOD lyrics.

Every film has to be different in story, songs and actings. Then only i think actor will HOLD for Longer!!

Yes CD, you have a point.. Rarely a full Kannada album would be worth buying as only one or two songs would be good at most.
I guess FM would not be a threat if the full album is good like in case of Gaalipata, and Mungaru Male..

  32. my opinion on July 8th, 2008 1:54 pm

disappointing. lacks strength, songs worse than aramane

  33. CD on July 8th, 2008 12:45 pm

    mohan

here business counts not the language. When demand is minimal to zero how can u expect the product to be seen everywhere?

The need for music has reduced because FM channels air good and selective songs of new movies 1000 times. So why should people spend 40-50 Rs in buying cds which has only 1 or 2 good songs? I doesn’t make any sense.

Hmmmm… Madesha, to some extent you have a point.. But your accusation that the reviewer is biased towards Ganesh is absolutely false..
You can check out the Aramane page.. A lot of hardcore Ganesh fans kept saying to the extent that the music deserves a Grammy and that movie deserves an Oscar!!! But this site criticised the music as well as the movie. And no matter what hardcore Ganesh fans said, the movie just became an average in the boxoffice.. Mussanje Maathu also same case..

  42. Madesha on July 7th, 2008 3:24 am

After reading quarter of this review and reading the whole Madesha review, I came to conclusion that you are leaning towards Ganesh and also not fit to give a review for Madesha. But your writing you like soft music. That DOES NOT give you the right to criticise heavier stuff when it is made to suit the occasion.

Bombat seems to be a disaster in the making. Ganesh is made for soft roles. He will bomb as an action star.

  43. Ranga on July 6th, 2008 8:10 am

PUNEETH has said in MAADESHA movie AUDIO RELEASE that MANO MURTHY’s music is like a SLOW POISON.. How perfect is he in his assessment .. BOMBAAT’s album seems to be a typical MANO MURTHY SLOW POISON..

I am slowly liking all the songs of the album including the title track by GURU KIRAN (for a change ).. At the moment, I am liking the songs in the following order

    1. CHINNA HELE HEGIRUVE..
    2. STRAWBERRY KENNEYA OH HUDUGIYE..
    3. MAATHINALLI HELALAARENU..
    4. I AM SO BOMBAAT..

After MUSSANJE MAATHU, this is the album in which I liked all the songs.. Also, GURUKIRAN’s songs always irritates me though with a few exceptions.. I had liked KOLLE NANNANNE from ARAMANE.. Now, I am liking I AM SO BOMBAAT .. The song is really peppy & has a superb rhythm & energy associated with it.. Other than BOMBAAT, all other songs are SHEER MELODY.. You will lap it up as you listen to it more & more..

    THANKS MANO MURTHY

  44. Chandru on July 6th, 2008 5:21 am

Matinalli Helalarenu(Shreya Ghoshal) is the best song of the year.. All three(Shreya, Manoo Murthy, and Jayant) have done a wonderful job. As Raju said, its the best song of Shreya in Kannada. Ramya always gets such beautiful tracks. She should be thankful to her music directors. Or is it that these music directors get inspiration from her amazing presence and give their best?? The more you listen to this song, the more it grows on you!

I tried to buy Bombat audio CD on 2nd July itself. Though the audio was released, it was not available anywhere! I tried in PlanetM and Music World also.. There also it was not available. They told that CDs would come 2-3 after the audio release. Poor marketing and distribution. That too, the audio is from Reliance!

Kannada audio CDs just cost somewhere between Rs.30 to Rs.40 whereas Hindi CDs cost around Rs.100. I don’t think anybody would mind spending 30-40 rupees as the CDs are fairly priced. But the marketing and distribution needs to be improved.

Female version of Maatinalli Helalarenu” is superb! I think this song will be a chartbuster.

  54. Mohan on July 4th, 2008 5:16 am

“I’m so bombat” is also not bad but an average one and definately suits Ganesh.
