Devaru Kotta Thangi Movie Review

(1.5/5) Movie Review By Raju Shanbhag
In a press conference held few days ago, director Sai Prakash had categorically mentioned that Devaru Kotta Thangi is not a film for urban audiences. Effectively, this means the souls like you and me, who are as hopelessly advanced as reading reviews on internet before watching a movie, are straightaway out of the contention to watch this movie. But does that mean that at least the rural audience, on whom Sai Praksh banks for the success of this movie, will watch this sob story called Devaru Kotta Tangi ?
Only mother Bhagyavanti, the goddess featured throughout the movie, will know!
Devaru Kotta Tangi is the story of a weeping duo of a brother and sister. Shivarajkumar and Meera Jasmine are brother and sister and they launch into an emotional overdrive every single time they see each other in the film for no apparent reason. Even when they bump into each other in their own house, they tenderly hold hands and deliver some hair-raisingly sentimental monologues. Shivarajkumar works for Avinash who is the richest person in the town and also the man with the biggest moustache around. Meera Jasmine once saves Avinash’s son’s life, and one thing leads to another and they both get married. Some other ladies in Avinash’s house with glittering ornaments and gold colored sarees are not amused and hatch a plot to make the weeping brother and sister duo cry even more.
Tears flow like a ravaging flood in the movie and an actual flood engulfs the villages in the climax (there is one at a beginning too). Meera Jasmine, who is pregnant by now, offers herself as a sacrifice to the flood to save her village, of course, with the customary tears.
Does Meera Jasmine get washed away in flood? Before you answer this difficult question, bear in mind that Shivarajkumar has offered a Sidi Seve (that bizarre offering where hooks are placed into the skin of the back of a man and he is lifted into thin air) for the better life of his sister.
Go now, predict the climax!
It’s not only the story that’s ancient, but also some of the thoughts that are expressed in the movie that look right out of a Chandamama comic book, sans all the entertainment. Sai Prakash may believe that these types of regressive thoughts may enthrall his target audience. But in an age where satellite television has walked right into the living rooms of the remotest villages of Karnataka, even rural people expect better entertainment and better narrative.
As usual, Shivarajkumar is neat. He may have been choosing wrong films off late, but there is nothing wrong with the talent of the man, who carries even this implausible character with surprising ease on his shoulders. The mega talented Meera Jasmine looks surprisingly off color but it all gets drenched in tears and more tears. Sadhu Kokila’s comedy is irritating and Shivarajkumar’s love interest, Monica has nothing much to do. Others like Avinash and Sumitra do full justice to their remuneration.
The film is technically sound, but it’s the dilapidated narrative that makes you want to come out of the theatre as soon as possible.
And I guess this includes the rural audience as well.

guys, check out my comment posted on “November 18th, 2009 7:04 pm” in this page.
anna shivanna, neenu appa or ajja parts maadappa… sumne yaake hero aagtya?? aa dr. vishnuvardhan-ge buddi illa, ajja aadru hero aagtane… neenu hange aadtyallappa??
It is very diifficult for any of current seniors and juniors come nearer to him because he is scary
This “king of kings” thing is true for actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand..etc also.. But that doesn’t mean that they should be playing hero roles now also!
Shivanna king of kings, one and only actor with vast versatality and stardom. It is very diifficult for any of current seniors and juniors come nearer to him.
Well, it was saddening to see Devaru Kotta Thangi team begging the audience to watch their film on all tv channels on sunday. An actor Vasu even threatened the viewers. All thanks to shivaraj kumar.
Ashwini Ramprasad in the only producer who made money during last 5 years, the rest of the producers went bankrupt. The audience has rejected this actor. Time has come for him to retire gracefully at 50.
Well said archaelogical expert.More of floods subject and less of emotions, etc would have been appropiate, since its been shown technicaly well with bgm and soiundeffects.
Raju Shanbhag pls promise me that next time if there is machu-thangi movie, then the rating should be only 1/2 out of 5. no stars should appear in the rating.
NO STARS FOR SIZZLING STAR
2010, one more machu movie called Tale Hodi Maga
what STONE AGE thing are you people talking about
tell me i am an archaeologist.. pls co-operate it could be an major discovery on this decade!
hiding ancient artifacts is a crime.
After reading the reviews decided not to watch this movie.Pavan sir is frustrated and his logic is 101 percent untrue. The whole industry is banking lot on versatility of him, formula movies are part and parcel of commercial formats.I am choosy about these kinda but seen rest all 50 excellant movies and will watch all movies without failure in 2010.

We are all in jet age ,not in old stone age to believe that surname, experience and seniority working out.
May I know when will shivrajkumar stop acting? he has only two strategies “Macchu” & “Thangi”. it is due to his surname , he is still active else he would have been like yester year heros ram kumar, charan raj etc etc.
Even today we would enjoy sitting and watching Shivrajkuamr hits like “Samyukta”, “Ratha Sapthami”, “Aasegobba Meesegobba” etc.
Shivraj- Please follow your brother Raghu, stop acting and let new faces to shine on kannada screens.
we dont care who’s sons are acting
we dont care who’s brothers are directing
we dont care who’s fathers are producing..
Please come out of stone age and make good movies that belong to this age.
Money has been granted by the central govt.
But the question is to which movie should the grants go?
2012 or Devaru Kotta Thangi
floods are everywhere.

this is the only website which gives very honest reviews. Good movies in KFI are like mirages in desert. I just love the sarcasm in your words mr.shanbhag. keep up the good work guys
Lot of floods,as mentioned by someone its picturisations is of hollywood level.
Flood how many in this movie?
Doing extremely well in North Karnataka,Hyderabad Karnataka and Chitradurga-Bellary.Manju looks like joker here.
In any case this website is enjoying extra hits for right or wrong reasons…purpose served….?
shivarajkumar has managed to completely finish off the producer(sai prakash this time).
Sai Prakash should be penalized for glorifying inhuman practices like Sidi Seve.. Shame on these directors who go to any lengths in the name of traditions to earn money.
@Mahesh
They are made of multiple brains to enjoy mulitiple stuffs.
No gains for the present day audiences neither entertainments nor language saving acts.We are least bothered about the impacts of remakes, cosmo cultured and ultramodern movies in the name of entertainments.Public opinions must be considered lot. They cant just impose what they presume that its relevant ,good and saving acts.
@ Mahesh
* such fans suffer from a complication known as ” filmy psychosis ”
* their mood, choices, acts, and everything else are determined and driven by the film/actor /actress they adore
* their brain switch according to the genre. Much like animals which have season for different behaviors.
* If these guys trouble you any way pls reffer them to my clinic.

I agree with you. They praise Shivrajkumar as though he is a great icon. They get angry with people throwing personal comments. They think that you dont have family values ete etc..He does not deserve any hero worship. Every movie that is hyped up falls flat. Once I say this, they start “copying and pasting the same comments”. KFI is in this state because of such fans. Please support good movies of every hero including Shivanna. We dont hate him., but cannot like every movie that he does.
These Shivarjkumar fans are funny! These guys praise about the greatness of rural traditions and folk stuff here.. And these same guys shower the same stuff on underworld(macchu) movies(Maadesha, Nanda..etc) also with equal reverence. I wonder what these guys are made of!
The film is based in a village, so the focus is on the traditional practices of the people there. Nagara Panchami song (Obba Thangi Maado Habba) illustrates the relationship between the brother and sister even after their marriage. Even today this practice exists, and brothers visit their sisters and present them with gifts on the occasion. Ugadi festival song (Kannadakke Saati Illa) is relevant about awareness. The three popular songs will focus on the festivities that are popular in Karnataka. The song shot in Ghaththaragi in Uttara Karnataka region will also says about the rituals of that part.
John and Detective ,thought provoking points.
Well written. Shivanna is gone case with pathetic movies one after the other. sai prakash– better we dont talk about this guy.. worst stone age movie….
Irresponsible and destructive reviews as usual. The satellite tvs has reached remotest villages and testtube babes are pouring with orphanage. The directar has categoricaly mentioned that its for rural audiences, obviously he has commonsense to believe that advanced souls are aliens to mankind. The so called internet reviews are meant only for cosmos(advanced souls) whose likings are universaly known.TOI cared less to write but the saviour of sandalwood has written with bias and legpulling intentions.I wonder whether there are any costs for writing reviews after going through reviews in recent past since invariably its lacking sense and consistency.
Max, u r immune to logic.. that explains y u praise such a movie.. look at ur own words, “TOI couldn’t care less”.. Thats the point.. So they dont care about Kannada movies. They write movie reviews without even watching movies like u write comments without watching the movie. Its like KFC putting Kannada boards, TOI puts kannda movie reviews, just for formality.
In other words sleuth Min, your old stories of directors paying the reviewers falls flat on its face. TOI couldn’t care less anyways…So why should they write glowing reviews of a film like DKT unless of course the film was really that good.
Times Of India review of this movie is a real paradox.. Sai Prakash is less likely to have paid them for the review bcos TOI readers were not target audience for this movie and TOI doesn’t have rural circulation.
Useless review. Please add a disclaimer that these are your views.
The film is doing well. An actor has to satisfy all demographics of his fans. The movie isn;t as bad as you make it out to be. Even Times of India has given 3 stars, Rediff has praised it.
But the ultra modern coool website of Kannada, bellitere thinks this is pretty low for its taste.
As usual and expected. Stop giving biased reviews.
Awesome movie with controled emotions and values. Its very much have social relevance and this age badly needs all sorts of culture, traditions and language awareness. The opening and closing sequences are technicaly good like 2012.
@Raju shanbag
Yes. Its an era of satellite bla bla bla..But we indians still have mother-father-son-sister-brother sentiments, rituals, festivals & nativity which is all shown in the movie..If u watch TV9 u can know more about superstitions/family crimes etc even today in ur so called alien era..This movie touches every brother-sister & i suggest this era parents to take their kids to this movie to know what is NAGARAPANCHAMI/ PRAVAHA/ VALUES OF HUMAN LIFE/HOW A BROTHER SHOULD ASPIRE FOR HIS SISTER’S MARRIAGE..etc..In this modern era nuclear family culture/irresponsible brothers aspiring for their own marriage/no respect for the age old cultures-aged persons as their earnings start with huge scales unlike their parents who would have started off with less payscales;still they valued our culture & brought their kids up etc..I suggest DKT IS THE MOVIE WHICH IS A MUST TO WATCH IF YOU ARE A SENSIBLE TRUE FAMILY MAN WHO IS FOND OF OUR CUSTOMS & CULTURE IN THIS MODERN SATELLITE ERA WITH VANISHING TRADITION LIKE THE REVIEW OF RAJU SHANBAG..
I was expecting you to review Yaaradu..
En kaala banthappa…mood nambike thorsoantha cinemagalu..shame on the directors and actors…
Good analysis..the same old wine is a new bottle concept should be stopped. We all know what Sai Prakash is good for. Nothing new to offer
Is this filmmaker a time traveller from 1989? lolz
hi Raju Shanbhag
u missed few movies like Yaaradu, 3g1s1n

All selfrespected and sensible folks are well aware of reviews of you guys about Rajani,Bellary naga, etc which were not only illogical but also senseless and too biased.
It seems that who are derived straight from mars and doesnt have any parents, siblings according to your logic. For pure and open minded audiences there will be emotions(which are intact in any periods),freshness and narration .Even there is not even bit mention about technical excellance in picturisations of floods which has social relevance.
The words nativity, soilsmell and folklore tales seems to be alien to you.
Its true fact that your mind is completely corrupted with senseless action flippers, skin shows, third class dialogues ,etc in the name of entertainments.Shame on your part.
