From Dark Aa Dinagalu to Bright Suryakanti!
“Those days,’ underworld movies ruled the roost in the Kannada film industry. When the young and not so well known director Chaitanya debuted with Aa Dinagalu, which was allegedly based on the story of former Bangalore Don Kothwal Ramachandra, every filmmaker in KFI was intent upon thrusting a machchu in the hero’s hands. But instead of glorifying the hero and the 5 feet long weapon in his hand, Chatanya chose a more realistic approach to Aa Dinagalu and the result was there for everyone to see.
Now, the director has retained most of his successful team for his second film Suryakanti. As we all know, the hero of the film is Chetan, the current hot hunk in KFI. Chaitanya has also retained Ilayaraja for music and H. C. Venu for cinematography from his last venture.
What Chaitanya has ditched this time around is the realistic approach that made him famous in Aa Dinagalu. Chaitanya says Suryakanti is an ‘action love story’, a readymade phrase used by many filmmakers who don’t have anything new to say in their films! While Aa Dinagalu was centered in and around Bangalore, Suryakanti will travel all over the state and also to parts of Uzbekistan for a song and some scenes.
Funnily, after his disastrous Birugali, Chetan has gained tremendous popularity and lost his beloved rubber band which adorned his ponytail. Well, you have to lose something to gain something! The guy is so famous among the weaker sex that he reportedly makes them go weak on their knees if they just see him!
Apparently, Regina, who plays Chetan’s love interest in the movie, is strong enough not to go weak on her knees. Maybe the girl knows the psychology of people who have an instant crush on stars; as she is a student of psychology! Also, she is not new to the glam and glitter of film industry as she started facing the camera when she was just 4 years old.
She acts only when she has summer holidays, and has acted movies such as Kanda Nal Mudhal, and Alagiya Asura. This is her first Kannada film and also for producer Vasu, who comes from a real estate background and is testing the waters in KFI.
Best of luck for the team of Suryakanti.

Chetan is like Ranbir kapoor + Shaid kapoor for KFI….. he and sharat lohitaswa were terrific in aa dinagalu
Yes Ashwin, you have a point! Both Kallara Santhe and Suryakanthi are due for release this month.. Lets see how these movies fare…
It is funny to hear Suresh’s remarks. Do you remember “Slum Bala”? It was the film Agni Sridhar wrote and Sumana Kittur directed. It got washed away in the gutter. So we all know now who was really the reason for Aa Dinagalu’s success.
The person who wrote this article seems like a male chauvinist: by calling women, the weaker sex, he shows his own weakness.
@kumar-there’s a lot of hope on ‘suryakanti’ no matter what you say. your comments are very one-sided as everyone you have put down are more talented than 90% of the industry!…. talent may not always find success– but it will definitely find appreciation and be remembered.
if ‘suryakanti’ fails to meet expectations, i’ll accept your comments on ‘aa dinagalu.’ if not, i expect you to accept mine.
all the best!
Aa Dinagalu had very good script by Sridhar, tight screenplay by Karnad, good support by Sumana Kittur and also very sharp editing by Nagendra Urs. I think, Suryakanthi is really challenging to Chaitanya. He has to prove his own talent.
Aaa Dinagalu was hit mainly because of script and performances by Sharad Lohitashwa & Atul Kulkarni. Chetan did well but he needs to improve a lot or Chaitanya has to struggle hard to get good performance from him. It should heavily bank on Ilayaraja’s music…However, Ilayaraja should stop signing….his voice sounds very old and odd…and does not suit young chetan…But still i have no hopes on this movie…mainly because subject is run of the mill action and love story…
Chaitanya mustn’t hype his movie, or else it will be difficult to meet the ppl’s expectation.
Yes Kumar.. Moreover Karnataka people do not bother much about looks as most of the superstars in the histroy of Kannada Cinema have/had not boasted of great looks.
Actually looks matter in case of heroines. Even that doesn’t happen in KFI. The girls like Vedhika, Mallika Kapoor, and Daisy Bhoopanna even though they possessed amazing looks didnt survive in KFI.
Its too big a gamble in KFI to just play on looks. it wouldn’t work.
If Chaitanya thinks he can do with Chetan’s looks alone with one or two good songs without any strong story and substance, i think he will follow the same way where Harsha has headed with Birugaali….
Action love story is routine…not a great news….
We cant tell any thing till we see movie … Thats KFI…. Hope for the best , and best of luck to Team,
Haven’t seen a best in the second by recent debutant directors. Hopefully Chaitanya does this time. Albeit it is not good hear about the phrase ‘action love story’ – there is nothing new in it. Its better to select different stories apart from action and love to rejuvenate KFI.
Hi, Chetan… How r u, i like u soo much. Best of luck for your future,
Thank you
