Jhossh Movie Review – Usual Campus Bash

(2.5/5) Movie Review By Raju Shanbhag
Well, first the good things.
Jhossh is an original film, and considering the deluge of remakes that is jamming the brains of Gandhinagar filmmakers these days, this seems almost as adventurous as jumping from the top of Niagara Falls. Jhossh is directed by Shivamani who is an old timer and who thankfully knows there is more to direction than saying action and cut. The film is technically very good and there are a couple of songs that stay with you for a while.
And now, the bad points.
Actually, there aren’t many. But there aren’t too many things to be proud of either except the ones listed above. Maybe Jhossh has come two films too late. We saw Moggina Manassu, which had similar theme and then we saw Jolly Days, which again revolved around teenage love stories and that exhilarating, but beaten to death concept of life on campus. Jhossh, although is a well made film, looks unintentionally similar to Jolly Days.
Unfortunately, however well made they are, there is an inherent problem with films like Jhossh. By their very choice of plot they orbit around the same old themes of college love, ragging, campus fights, college day functions etc, etc., which you have been seeing since your school days till your current life in office. In that sense, Jhossh has rarely anything new to offer, and we have already seen whatever it offers well!
Jhossh tracks the teenage lives of a bunch of youngsters who step into a college. No prizes for guessing that the gang has equal number of boys and girls and some of them fall in love with each other (all with opposite sex, just to be clear!) They have some filmy parents who always seem to be on an emotional high of either uncontrolled happiness or devastating sadness. And then, there is this funny acting villain who looks and acts like a burnt down version of Jim Carrey (there is actually an imitation of a scene from Mask). There are the usual group songs, love songs, item numbers and patho tracks before the film ends on a happy note, wrapped in a social message declaring that students should study rather than falling in love when they are in college.
The film has rich looks thanks to cinematographer Santhosh Rai Pathaaje. Vardhan does a neat job as a debutant music director, but he also quietly slips one copied tune from Hey Babyy from the backdoor. Shivamani works surprisingly well with a bunch of newcomers and extracts real good performances from every one of them, which is quite an achievement. He handles even the emotional scenes well, which is again a plus.
Among the newcomers, Rakesh and Poorna have a lion’s share of the screen space and they do complete justice to their roles. Old timers like Achyuta Rao and Sudha Belawadi don’t need to be handled as they do well anyway. Sharan’s comedy looks outdated.
On a whole, Jhossh is a well made film that came a bit too late for producer Sanjay Babu’s liking. Still, we hope it does well because its original and it packs in some nice performances.
Sadly, that’s a real bad commentary on other films that are coming in Gandhinagar these days.

Readers of bellitere,
Please read the below comments rather than the actual review written over by Raju…This movie is really a worth watch…..
It might look like male version of Moggina manassu cos of the similar message..but it is a still more better version of moggina manassu specially due to the performances of actors and to a very neat narration specially the second part….
First half looks usual, but u ll definitely feel the film for second half…Kudos to shivamani & babu for giving out this movie….Music is bit lame and is excusable as he is a new comer…
Specail mention about villian character…Havent seen anybody who have immitated Jim Carrey’s MASK to the perfection…Mr.Robo..please do more characters like this…I am loving IT!!!
4 stars is what I rate…..
after a long time shivamani has come out with a good movie and this movie is not a copy of any movie(thank god for that). he has really done up a great job. i m afraid this movie will be a hit coz most of the college going lovers may not like the movie. But its a watchable movie for all. Parents or children. everyone has done their jobs and lets wait how the younger generation reacts to this movie. It has a serious message for the youngsters.
Hi,
This movie is really good for the young generation. Students should watch this movie, especially the so called “lovers” at colleges. though the villan’s performance is good, it sometimes irritates. A bit of comic with some good songs makes this movie watchable. It has a good message for the teenagers who want to fall in love other than their studies. Kudoos to Shivamani for making a good movie with all the newcomers in.
Happy ending college love stories are made in every film industry, but this movie takes out the reality that your career is first important. I liked the way the second love of the hero rejects his love because he is not settled in his life. Guys, this is reality. Its different from JOLLYDAYS and MOGGINA MANASU, coz it doesn’t end in d same old love story.
A must watch for the teenagers.
Girls…. beware, your boyfriends may not take you to this movie.:)
I felt the review is more sympathatic to the movie than sarcastic..
Looks Unintentionally similar to JollyDays???? Then i guess u have not seen Jollydays or U havent seen JOSH at all….. Josh is really a very well made movie and i dont know why your review is so sarcastic Down with u man……
Guys Josh is an excellent movie pls go watch it
i would rate 4/5
the movie is realy good plz dont miss it……….
Don’t miss this well made movie…..thought the stuff is routine…it stands out due to its presentation style by Shivamani….watch this movie for the stupendous climax…..
Very gud movie with a meaningful message in recent times in Kannada.
I dont know why but Raju Shanbhag always tries to underplay the good things and highlights the so called negative aspects of the movie. I agree the review should be as honest as possible but that does not mean u need to always harp on the negative aspects only.
Common man, give it to them – they hav given us a very good movie which is definitely worth more than 2.5 rating!
It is usual campus comedy as u said Raju Shanbhag, but the climax message for youth is very strong and touching. I saw it yestdy and was amazed to watch this film… This film deserves more than **1/2. I will rate it ***1/2. I will recommendit to all, Go catch the jhossh…
I saw the movie..its truely refreshing
Amazing acting by all the new chaps!!
