Just Maat Maathalli Movie Review

(2.5/5) Just Miss!
In a strange way, Just Maath Maathalli can be the answer to those who deride the importance of script in a film. Like the pearls strung together in a chain, JMM has sensible, restrained direction, good acting, refreshing background score and top notch cinematography. But the string that can hold all these pearls together, the script, is too weak to hold them for two and half hours.
And boy, that’s one heck of a drawback in a film which could otherwise have been reasonably good one.
It’s ok if the story is on the expected lines; we as audience have learnt to live with it. But the script too seems to be bored with the story in JMM and it does not make any attempts to enliven the pace of the film. It’s as if the story lugs along on its own while the script has gone for a walk. Too bad!
A major part of JMM is narrated in flashbacks, with an irritating Rajesh prodding an unresponsive Sudeep at every 10 minutes intervals to push the story ahead. Siddharth (Sudeep) is on a plane to Singapore to find his lost love Tanu (Ramya), whom he meets in a railway station, which by the way is as uninspiring as the script itself. One thing leads to another and Siddharth rejects the advances of Tanu because he has a painful past. But then, he gets the enlightenment from a friend who wears monkey caps most of the time and is back to get Tanu.
From story to dialogues and from screenplay to direction, Sudeep contributes in various departments and stands out for his direction. In fact, the direction is so good that it almost looks incongruous to the script of the film! Throughout the film, Sudeep shows a fine restraint that only comes with the confidence in one’s abilities to narrate the story with minimum of melodrama. Really, such fine direction needed a better help in the story department.
Sudeep, the actor is as usual, a treat to watch. His acting, coupled with his body language is among the best in business. He plays a character that has two distinct personalities with stunning ease and comes out with flying colors.
And then, there is Ramya. She plays the bubbly, vivacious chatterbox who is simply irresistible. In spite of the alleged off screen ‘fire’ between Sudeep and Ramya, the onscreen chemistry is fantastic between the two. Ramya’s presence in the film is like crackers bursting in a cold night; warm, colorful, and bringing in lots of much needed warmth.
There aren’t too many other actors (thankfully). Rajesh does a neat job, but his character itself is irritating. Keerthi Gowda makes a small appearance and makes the best of what she gets. Avinash sleepwalks through the streets of Singapore with his insignificant role.
There is nothing more to write about Raghu Dixit’s songs (we have had ‘healthy’ discussions about that in our music review) but his background music is outstanding. Watch out for his background score when Sudeep watches Ramya as a bride in the climax.
JMM could have been a splendid effort, if only Sudeep and his team had worked on the script to make it a little more interesting. Even then, the film has lot of watchable moments.
Of course, it’s a must watch, if you are a fan of Ramya!

sikkapatte bore!!!!!! the friend character(film-maker) is IRRITATINGGGGGGG!! very slow film….really boring. only good thing in the film is raghu dixit background music…if not for that i would have slept off in the theatre only…..yawn! and starting railway station scenes here and there they’ve done copy and paste from hindi film jab we met….

Awesome movie of the year…every body must watch it..great acting by Sudeep,Ramya n Rajesh….
Vikram ,i agree with your comments on story, narration and Ramya’ s performance.
Just watched the movie. Ramya acting, Sudeep’s direction and the track ‘Munjaane Manjalli’ are the only saving graces for the film. The story is almost non-existent with a painfully long second half where I lost half my hair! Ramya’s acting, as I told, is as natural as ever and she must definitely rank as one of the best actors not only in Kannada film industry but across India. The direction keeps the movie at a decent level. Can’t imagine what Prem would have done with it!
Good attempt by Kiccha. Surprise package is Raghu dixit background score.. especially in the climax scene.Songs are well picturised. there is different narrative style in the movie. It is a good watch.Kiccha stands out in direction very well made movie

movie is very bad and doesn’t even deserve a single time watch!!! its not worth spending money and time for this film!! had lot of expectations, but leave about living upto the expectations, its actually below average with stale script!!
no freshness, no lighter moments, stupid and artificial dialogues, boring like hell, irritating storyline, i still wonder sudeep has directed this movie considering his earlier efforts!!

En Torture guru ee cinema..rubber band eldange eldavre
ramesh don’t fool the people,it’s in avrage movie’
Its an avergae movie. As BT mentioned, lack of good story. Often it bores, 50 days movie. Good Effort but sudeep should have been careful when it comes to writing story.
Its an outstanding movie.. Hatts off to sudeep and team… Performance by Sudeep will yield him many awards this time… and in direction too…
The movie deserves more than 2.5 stars… We have seen many movies with weak story but the presentation makes up for everything. Gaalipata , Mungaru Male for example….
I rate it 4/5 stars… Dont waste time…… Book ur ticket….. coz you may not get the ticket after a week……!!!! 25 week movie….
