Maadesha

August 24th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Maadesha Director Ravi Srivatsa has brandished his weapons once again. But this time, it’s not against the hapless journos. The censor board said that there are too many violent scenes in Maadesha and it is not fit for public viewing and rejected certifying it! Only when Ravi Srivatsa agreed to cut few scenes, the censor board okayed it and that too with A certification. While for director Ravi Srivatsa it may just be another day at office, things have taken a rather uncomfortable U Turn for Dr. Rajkumar’s family, which is known to provide good, clean entertainers. There was a time when censoring Dr. Raj’s films were just a mere formality. Things have not changed all that much, as even Puneet and Shivaraj kumar’s films are known to provide good entertainment to the masses. Even though Shivanna’s films like Jogi had a streak of violence, but they never crossed the border.

Apart from its ‘violent’ controversy, the film has Shivaraj kumar in the lead role, supported by Sonu Bhatia, a model from Mumbai. Ravi Belagere has written the dialogues for the film. Mano Murthy has come up with the music, which too has picked up the violence in the film and turned it on the ears of the listeners!

The film will release on Aug. 29 and it will be interesting to see whether Ravi Srivatsa can come out of the series of flops that he has been giving off late. His earlier masterpieces include Ganda Hendathi (a rip off from Hindi film, Murder) and Eee Rajiv Gandhi alla (Yup, even we hadn’t heard about it!).

Maadesha Movie Review By Raju Shanbhag

There is a scene in Madesha which unravels director Ravi Srivatsa’s approach to this movie in all its naked glory. Shivarajkumar is standing in between some cleanly washed white colored vans lined up just for the occasion (well, the director didn’t want us to know this!). Shivarajkumar just bangs his fists on the bonnet of the vans near him and the glasses of all the vans explode in slow motion! With that, director Ravi Srivatsa blows whatever hopes you had about this movie being realistic; or at least semi-realistic like Jogi and Om.

maadesha Times have changed; Madesha is not a village simpleton like Jogi. He wears designer sunglasses even in dark rooms, romances a hot babe in Australia, and routinely chops off the fat Bangalore rowdies in his free time. Usually, in multiplexes, there is a slide shown before the movie starts which says, “Bomb or bombshell, never touch it if it’s not yours.” Madesha doesn’t go to multiplexes; so he touches both with disastrous effects. Only, the effects are all on viewers, while Madesha settles comfortably in Australia with his empire intact.

Director Ravi Srivatsa seems to be fascinated by slow motion movements as every second frame the movie slips into prolonged slow motions, with Shivarajkumar walking towards you menacingly with other extras filling up the remaining part of the screen. Why Madesha fights and why he becomes a don has some alleged reasoning behind it. But even Madesha’s right hand rowdies will laugh that off before they kick some more butts. Whatever reasoning Ravi Srivatsa provides for Madesha to become a rowdy sheater, it just looks like an excuse for more bloodbath and mayhem.

The problem with Madesha is that it does not touch you at any level. Films like Jogi and Om, which had their fair share of glorifications of underworld, had a touch of realism running like an undercurrent throughout those movies, forcing you to identify yourself with the main character without you even noticing it. But in “slow motion Madesha,” he is too good for anybody. Every frame of this film has a single purpose, eulogizing Shivarajkumar. Even the home minister of the state talks to Madesha as if he is speaking to Manmohan Singh. (Incidentally, Rediff reviewer R G Vijayasarathy, who played Ramya’s car driver in Bombat plays the home minister in this movie. Boy, this is quite a promotion!)

Director Ravi Srivatsa has the help of Ravi Belagere, who almost has a doctorate when it comes to providing information on Bangalore underworld. In fact, Ravi Srivatsa gets many interesting aspects to explore as the movie progresses. But alas, he is not going to waste his time on such laughable issues like facts and storyline. He has one mission; glorify Shivarajkumar as if there is no tomorrow. He wants Shivarajkumar to fight, he wants Shivarajkumar to emote with his mother just to keep the family audience engaged, and he wants Shivarajkumar to wear sunglasses (may be that’s his idea of being hip and happening) and he wants Shivarajkumar to carry his weak script.

maadesha

And guess what, Shivrajkumar does all that and more. If it wasn’t for Shivarajkumar, the movie would have been comfortably flushed out of the theatres within days of its release. But it’s also saddening to see an actor of caliber of Shivanna being wasted on such weak roles and senseless stories. He makes even this character believable with his amazing screen presence and mature acting. There is something about Shivarajkumar that makes you believe him when he is bashing up a bunch of goons with his short personality. If by any chance, Madesha becomes a hit, Shivarajkumar will be the only reason behind that.

Shivarajkumar’s love interest, Sonu Bhatia, is just that; a mere love interest. She is seen more in Australia than in Bangalore (for songs) and stands obediently in the background for the family photo sessions when she is not in Australia. About her acting; well she looks gorgeous! Ravi Kale yells loudly enough until you concede that the guy has acted well.

Finally, a ‘bottom item’ for Ravi Belagere. Well, we’ve all loved him as one of the finest journalists in Kannada and a supremely talented writer. But when you see the man running with his pot belly in the midst of city market, it feels as if we have lost a little precious image of our beloved writer. Of course, I know it’s just acting; but unfortunately Ravi, as you said somewhere, the details about your personality other than your writing are ‘uninteresting.’

Sadly, this includes your acting abilities to
o!

Maadesha Audio(Music) Review:

By Raju Shanbhag

It seems composer Mano Murthy has become a square peg in a round hole while composing music for Madesha. While the posters of the film promise hell lot of bloodshed, there is no place for Mano Murthy’s soulful type of music in this film. With only one or two songs worth listening in the entire album, Madesha disappoints big time, especially because it features a high profile composer and Shivanna, an actor whose films have hit music, most of the time.

Tirugo E Bhumige: The faint resemblance to the James Bond theme music in the beginning of this song makes you believe that this song has a detective feel to it. But then, both Mano Murthy and singer Vijaya Prakash strike a double blow with a listless tune that dares you to listen to it if you can. Lyrics by V. Nagendra Prasad and Kaviraj are sarcastically befitting for the song.

maadesha Tharammayya: We all know about Mano Murthy’s penchant for old film songs. In this song rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan and Hemanth, he ably demonstrates his love for old songs as he cleverly remakes “Bande Barutane, Rama Bande Barutane” from Sipayi Ramu. The singing by Sunidhi Chauhan is neither inspired nor insipid. Hemanth is just there to fill in the gaps.

Munjane Manjagu: Kunal Ganjawala and the persistent drum beats stop this song from being a really nice song. Kunal Ganjawala has outlived his USP factor (Unique Selling Point) in Kannada and all his songs sound exactly the same. The music directors and the producers should have realized this before we listeners did. Even Shreya Ghoshal is wasted in the song and sounds like B. R. Chayaa in this song. Lyricist Kaviraj does a good job with imaginative lyrics for the song. But Mano Murthy manages to display shades of his brilliance through the thick maze of Kunal Ganjawala’s voice and drum beats.

Madesha: Gurukiran sings this title track with lots of pent up emotions in his voice and manages to sound vicious enough. Although sometimes, you feel that something has stuck in his throat and the poor guy is trying to cough it out. But the real atrocity on the song is committed by none other than its creator, Mano Murthy. If the sounds could kill, Mano Murthy has delivered a terminator with this song. V. Nagendra Prasad writes something about the underworld, but you need to have a heart of steel to withstand the blistering music and listen to the lyrics.

Lahari: The winning combo of composer Mano Murthy, lyricist Jayant Kaikini and singer Sonu Nigam return once again trying to recreate the magic of Mungaru Male. Well, it may be difficult to match the torrential success of Mungaru Male with this song, but the song is worth listening any time. Jayant Kaikini’s lyrics have this conversational ability and yet, there is a sweet lyrical quality to his poetry; easily the best song of this otherwise happily forgettable album.

Gamtu Gamtu: The mastery over fast, foot tapping numbers does not come to Mano Murthy as easily as his mastery over soothing, soulful songs. This difference is as clear as daylight in this song, rendered by Hemanth, Keshav and Srividya. It’s as if Mano Murthy started the song promisingly and then experienced a creative block in taking it ahead. Again, a forgettable song.

Lahari: This is the female version of Sonu Nigma’s song and guess what? Shreya Ghoshal does a better job compared to Sonu Nigam!

Gayatri Mantra: Gayatri Mantra gets a western makeover! The song is short and nice on your ears.

Om movie was released on 1995 and its 13yrs now and still CD, DVD is not available anywhere. Also the movie is not being released anywhere. Its so sad as we,kannadigas are not able to watch the movie and have to wait till the movie is released 6 months once or once in a year.
Please release the movie soon and see to that this movie is released once in a month anywhere in bangalore.

    Its a humble request.

  4. Naveen on September 21st, 2008 10:05 pm

I am a great fan of OM movie *ing Shivarajkumar and great director Upendra.

Giving such a blockbuster movie, why has upendra not directing movies now. I am expecting one more block-buster(like Om *ing shivarajkumar) and it has to be OM part 2.

Please can Upendra do this for all the kannadigas

  5. praveen on September 15th, 2008 12:37 am

Well, Sonu has nice legs.. Probably the best legs I have seen in recent times in KFI.
Ravi Srivatsa does have some beauty sense atleast!
But I wonder what Sonu Bhatia thought of Sivanna’s hairstyle!!! He.. he.. :)

  6. satish on September 13th, 2008 10:11 pm

In the heat of the moment, looks like everybody has overlooked the beauty, Sonu Bhatia. Man! She’s amazing. Nice pics..

  7. niranjan on September 10th, 2008 5:00 pm

Ravi Srivatsa is directing a film with Raj sons for Pyramid Samira(kuchelan producer). So, one more producer is added to Ravi Srivatsa’s hit list. Now don’t ask about Shivaraj kumar’s hitlist ;-)

  8. Sudheer on September 10th, 2008 1:33 pm

Its a crap movie in the recent time… You will surely regret after watching it.. Down with Shivarajkumar for acting in such movie

  9. Chandra on September 8th, 2008 5:50 pm

I read the review. The movie is not bad as explained there. It is fast moving and has a good camera work. U never get bored any time during the movie. The movie is good to watch it once.

If you go as per the review given above, then we can comment badly on each and every movie in all languages and there would be no movie worth watching. may be the review is a single person’s view point. but please do not generalize and say it’s not a good movie. when writing reviews, please write some +ve points about the movie. With Maadesha movie in consideration, i would say it have both +ve and -ve points. While only -ve points are exaggerated in the above review.

Gone are the days when we could take our family to the movie from Dr.Raj family without thinking twice. There is so much bloodshed in the movie that I got fed up and came out from the talkies halfway thru! Shame on censor people for allowing such movies to be screened public..

Bellitere guys, you people are doing a great job. I wont go to any kannada movie in future without reading review here.. Keep it up.

  12. praveen on September 4th, 2008 12:46 pm

Its bad to see Shivanna wasting his talent and reputation by acting in such movies.

  13. gopala on September 4th, 2008 12:28 pm

Before the film released, I was very much tempted to see this film. But on reading the comments, my mind has changed & have decided not to see this movie.
Hopes, are getting duped & it is the time not to waste hard earned money on this type of kannada films.
    Hats off to the critics

  14. praveen on September 1st, 2008 4:15 pm

Deepak, by praising his bad movies, u u guys are only spoiling his career. Since Jogi(2005), he’s not given a single significant hit! Its hightime that he introspects his own movies and especially he should be careful of people like u who shower compliments even on his junk movies!!
    Shivanna, wake up..

Yes, its high time Shivrajkumar should change his advisors! He should throw the people who’s suggested him these hair styles and he should throw the people who made him accept such movies… Whoever or whatever they are, they’re definately not his well-wishers!

  23. Sumanth on August 31st, 2008 1:54 pm

Well said Nagaraj. Do they think Kannada audience accept any crap like Madesha? Same old rowdism subject again.. Thoo shame on RS. Dont understand why Shivarajkumar signs all these crap subjects? Is he so desparate to increase his movie count?? Poor producer… loosing his money .. :(

  24. Shrikanth on August 31st, 2008 1:06 pm

Well said Nagaraj! Now a days most of the movie titles are copied from old hits. Kodagana Koli Nungitta, Antu Intu Preethi Bantu, Nannusire… the list is endless.

  25. Nagaraj on August 31st, 2008 12:05 pm

Ondhu thara Shivannana career slow motion nalle hogtide :) All these people(Ravi Srivtsava, Upendra, Shivanna…etc) are desperate souls who are trying to repeat their past glory without really understanding the fact that kannada viewers have changed, especially after Mungaru Male. Using the old big hits names like Maadesha, Jogi, or using underworld theme which has yielded great results in the past wont help.. Instead they have to come up with new stories, and some honest attempt to make a good movie instead of faking like this!

  26. Mukesh TS on August 31st, 2008 11:50 am

  33. Anonymous on August 11th, 2008 7:04 pm

This site is a big crap… it says Bombat music is better than Madesha wht a joke… all the songs in Bombat suck to the core… the title track is one of the biggest craps..

Madesha all the songs r rocking..!!! just wait till the movie releases every one will get to know this sites attitude.

  34. Madesha on July 14th, 2008 3:12 am

Dude the riffs remind me of Power Metal…Especially the solo…Its a good song….anyday better than I am so bombat which is crap

  35. Anonymous on July 13th, 2008 2:55 pm

Is the song ‘Munchaane Manchaakhu’ actually sung by ‘Shreya Ghoshal’, sounds like someone else to me. after all i have a lot of her other tracks but somehow the tone doesn’t seem to be the same.

  36. Anonymous on July 7th, 2008 5:42 am

Heavy metal stuff is no bad.. But heavy metal stuff from Manoo Murthy is bad!! Probably if Raghu Dixit had composed for such kind of music, it would have come off well.. At least Raghu DIxit has a good rock library!!

  37. Madesha on July 7th, 2008 3:19 am

Blistering music indeed? If heavy metal guitar riffing is considered bad I wonder what is good. In my humble opinion I feel this album is a winner all the way. I feel it aint perfect but its good. The music sales and radio airtime proves me right.

In any case the public will give the final verdict. I sense this film will go onto be a blockbuster.

  38. Anonymous on July 5th, 2008 4:16 pm

Average album but again Manomurthy has been forced to change his usual style, but still he is the better music director in kannada. For the above comments..Raghu Dixit is still one movie old so cannot comment. Remember that Harikrishna’s fame from Galipata was b’cuz of minchaagi the tune lifted from Anisuttide. You cannot listen to some his songs at all. Gurukiran has almost lost his track from giving good music. Still Manomurthy is the best in Kannada

  39. satyappa on July 4th, 2008 11:43 am

This Music Director gives same kind of music. Only MM songs are good. I don’t like his Music style, same rythm and same kind of tune. And this fellow won’t gives chance to Kannada Singers. There are very good singers in KFI why to bring Bollywood and pay so much.
I agree that he has given good Music to MM.But he is waste after MM.
There are good Music Directors coming in KFI like Anoop, V Harikrishna and Lastest one Raghu Dixit, who’s songs are rocking all over Karnataka as well outside Karnataka and India.
