Maleyali Jotheyali Movie Review

December 13th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

BT Rating: ★★½☆☆ (2.5/5)

When will the rains stop???

Ganesh - Anjana SukhaniIncessant rains have a unique quality about them. In the beginning, you feel a tinge of excitement when they drench you, you want to feel the downpour and you want to play in the rain. But gradually, as the excitement wears off, you feel irritated by the relentless downpour, the monotony of the drizzle and the wearisome work of having to deal with the constant state of wetness.

Maleyali Jotheyali, Preetham Gubbi’s second directorial venture, is more like a rain that has outlived its novelty factor, while all that remains is the forced reminiscence of a bygone era when the rains used to enthrall your senses with their freshness and uniqueness.

Not anymore.

Maleyali Jotheyali, while having the good sense of not copying the story of Mungaru Male, tries desperately to recreate the magic of Mungaru Male, which brought varying degrees of recognition for Ganesh and Preetham Gubbi. The result is an amalgamation of various scenes that remind you of Mungaru Male and Gaalipata, makes you laugh a bit, takes you on a tour of beautiful locales of Sakaleshapura, and then makes you forget everything in a hurry once you step out of the theatre.

The film has a story that has Ganesh written all over it. A chatter box of a boy caught with two babes (not necessarily beautiful all the time) in hilly, misty, picturesque locales, supported by beautifully composed songs and frames is the stuff all the Ganesh movies are made of. That rabbit was there in Mungaru Male, and that house was used in Gaalipata. Those punch packed dialogues about love and heart were witnessed in almost all of Ganesh’s earlier movies. And that rain has been used by KFI in almost every love story released post Mungalu Male.

Getting the bigger, wetted picture?

Anjana Sukhani

As if an attempt to recreate the feel of Mungaru Male was not enough, this film is heavily inspired by Bollywood in more than one ways you can think of. To start with, both the leading ladies of the film, Yuvika Choudari, and Anjana Sukhani are Bollywood imports. Then, Harikrishna gets inspired by a couple of Bollywood tracks to belt out the tunes for the movie, and then, Preetham Gubbi conveniently lifts an entire sequence from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (The scene where SRK practices proposing to Rani in front to Kajol).

Preetham Gubbi’s direction treads cautiously on a slippery track (too much of rain?) and does a tolerable job. It must be difficult to rebuild the Mungaru Male magic and yet try to chart your own course in the process. He makes some actors (especially Rangayana Raghu and Dattanna) go overboard in many scenes, while the leading ladies Yuvika Choudari, and Anjana Sukhani just stand there and stare at Ganesh most of the time.

Needless to say, the dialogues are written with Ganesh in mind. They are sometimes witty and sometimes they look forced. Mahesh Devishetti can be a good asset to Kannada industry if he can stop serving the images of the stars and starts concentrating on the story instead.

The film belongs to Ganesh and the man tries his best to make it work. His acting and dialogue delivery are impeccable even though his body shows signs of having acquired all the fringe benefits of stardom. He is a treat to watch in many scenes, although ends up overacting in a couple of scenes.

Rangayana Raghu continues his buffoonery while others such as Sihi Kahi Chandru and Dattanna join the fun in various stages. Sudharani’s role is too small to be of any significance to her or to the movie.

On a whole, Maleyali Jotheyali is a decent watch only of you have not watched earlier Ganesh movies such as Mungaru Male and Gaalipata.

  11. amoolya on January 3rd, 2010 12:24 pm

Ganesh is a good actor..but his association with stupid director like “Preetham Gubbi” who is so stupid to use same rabbit etc etc trying to repeat the same formula is disgusting, I hope people stop offering this Gubbi guy any further movies

GANESH IS BEGGING PEOPLE TO WATCH HIS FILM. NEWS PAPERS, TV CHANNELS & RADIO STATIONS HAVE BEEN ALSO PROCLAIMING THAT IT IS GOOD & SUPER HIT. AS HE HAS BEGGED & BRIBED THEM.

    FINAL RESULT SUPER FLOP FILM.

  15. Raj on December 29th, 2009 7:04 pm

Ganesh thinks he can do another mungaru but his overconfidense about his films makes film flop miserabaly…….ade raaga ade haadu….ade sonu nigam…ade ganesh……making maleyali jotheyali the last big flop of year 2009……..

  20. Suresh on December 27th, 2009 6:14 pm

Watchable once. There is hangover but its to little extent otherwise no regrets.Couple of songs and its picturisations are good.

  21. KFI on December 25th, 2009 12:36 pm

    @Ravi,
You’re absolutely right. This Ganesh is still in “Mungaru Male” hangover. The same old dialogues “heartu, para-para, cancer, devadasa” are very lame and are of cheap taste. It makes one feel like vomiting to listen to the similar dialogues in similar dead pan dialogue delivery. We have to ban or boycott these kind of useless films….

    @John Max,
Is “Raam” already released? Did it complete 100 days alreaady???

  22. Ravi on December 25th, 2009 2:39 am

I found it very difficult to sit in the theatre with all those repeated dialogues ( heart – para para , that silly rabbit, and so on). I had gone there with the hope that since it the star’s home production, there will be some common sense and old dialogues and scenes may not be repeated, but everything including the is just a repetition and very irritating. Only his comedian friend acted nicely in the movie

  23. John Max on December 23rd, 2009 11:38 am

This film is a mega flop. Bogus Box office reports are coming thats all. My friend in Dharwad told that the film is already making way for blockbuster Raam.

    @ Ajax and Amith,

Hope you guys are from Andhra or Tamilnadu, only people from there praise their fav hero’s movies like this, irrespective of how gud or bad the movie is. Come on guys, get a life. we have watched MM or Galipata because movie was gud. Even we watched MJ thinking it would be a gud movie but it turned out to be a dud. Take a chill pill….hope for a better movie from Ganesh next time.

HI friends,Maleyalli Jotheyalli is Best Movie of the Year 2009.
Dont miss this movie otherwise u may miss one of the best film after Mungaru Male in Kannada.
Its really Heart touching Specially last 30 Minutes. A hope Who r all blogged as its not god are Puneeth’s fans .They don’t want to see ram as a flop in front of Maleyalli Jotheyalli.

  29. Mahesh on December 18th, 2009 12:49 am

    @ajax
Better u keep watching the boards in MG road rather than watching this movie.. Mouth to mouth publicity is going on. So no body will come to watch this movie from next week . I hope u will give the same support for other movies also, but i doubt because u have mentioned some average movies as hit movies for this year without mentioning the real hit movie. Hope u got ur mistake dear.

  30. Ajax@GG on December 17th, 2009 11:26 pm

To all the comments,,, its easy to sit here & comment that its bad movie.. blah blah…
this is the sickening attitude of our ppl.. No Unity,, I agree to the fact that it has lots of shades of MM… But quality-wise is Seriously the Best in 2009.. Hardly few Kan Movies ran successfully in 2009.. & wat was the answer from them,, quality mattered.. be it savaari or manasaare.. Just watch the Promotion Given by Ganesh to this movies,,, hav u guys seen any Kan Ad Boards in Residencey Road,, MG Road or such cosmo dense places in Bangalore.. just see PVR shows about MJ,, they are filling up day by day.. Ganesh’s has a Complete Class+Mass Attraction in KFI.. So if ppl are liking it,, & watching It.. Plz Support Kannada Movies… & stop this sarcastism in the comments… & One more thing,, Irrespective or the reviews,, its the ppl’s mouth to mouth publicity which makes ppl to throng the theater.. & Make it a Superhit

    -Ajax

hey guys n gals….. plz don waste ur time by watchin this movie…. there is nothin new in this movie… preetham gubbi is the worst director…. n ganes is the worst actor…. u cant even watch for a minute…. i have lot of expectations.. on suryakaanti….

Stupid comment from Mahesh about Shv.

  33. Mahesh on December 16th, 2009 10:27 am

Ganesh, I’m a big fan of yours. Don’t believe the people who tell you that MJ is a good movie. They’re bluffing you. Come out of Mungaru Male hangover or else your life will become like that of Shivarajkumar who’s still living on the outdated glory of Jogi and Janumada Jodi.

I saw you on Comedy Time the other day.. You’re still very good there. You can still connect with the audience. It’d be good for you if you continue that show so that you can always be in touch with the audience.. Remember, people are not rejecting “Ganesh” but they’re rejecting “Ganesh’s movies”.

Stop working with Creative Parasites like Preetham Gubbi.

  34. Sangam on December 16th, 2009 1:13 am

After manasaare thd MJ is one of the good movie.sir u given 3.5/5.why u given 2.5 i don’t understand ganesh acting is good, comedy, songs, story also good but only dailogue repeats.

  35. Latoya on December 15th, 2009 4:25 am

When you make same kind of movies, it will
not sustain in long run. After good opening,
    it will crash.

    Eg: haage summane – mm
    Paris pranaya – nph
    Mj – mm

  36. adarsh on December 14th, 2009 7:09 pm

The movie might do well initially because it will obviously have a good opening, but I highly doubt if it will sustain. Also, I never go by reviews in the newspapers..because unlike this website(which has appropriate, creative reviews), news papers are paid to hype the film. I may be wrong, but i watched maleyali expecting something out of the box but not only did I watch “copy and paste” scenes but felt bad about the fact that KFI is sinking. I have expectations from films like Raam and Suryakaanti.

  37. coolz on December 14th, 2009 6:27 pm

VK has wrriten bogus news about opening and all.Well there must be support and encouragement to this movie but not by telling lies. The technical crew done good job is common feedbacks.

  38. Kishor on December 14th, 2009 6:20 pm

Also Prashanth, i didn’t say MJ released in Prasanna and Pramod, all i said was any decent kannada film released in any of these theatres will become house in the weekend of it’s release

  39. Kishor on December 14th, 2009 6:15 pm

    Prashanth,

I don’t know for which show Preetham visited Veeresha theatre. I was in Veeresha theatre for 7.30 Show, for that show Balcony was houseful. I paid 80 Rs in black for a 50 Rs ticket price. But Middle class was half empty.

I reassure you that only Balcony was getting housefull in all shows in Veeresh but it is not the same with 2nd class.

however, if the movie becomes a hit it is good for KFI and I will be one among to cheer the success of Ganesh’s movie.

  40. Prashanth A on December 14th, 2009 5:43 pm

    Thanks to Mahesh,Adarsh and Kishore.

Its not modesty .. i would like to rate this 4.5 because few of his dialogues were repeated so many times which were lil boring at times, few of the comedy scenes were made ugly by raghu and others.. In emotional scenes we felt as if he is laughing instead of crying…

and @ adarsh,: There is no need to commit suicide, just go through the articles published in the papers and you will get know that it has to an extent brought the people back to theaters.
It is the most expected movie and it has lived up to its expectations..

Kishore, i really dnot know y you are saying these things..
Kishore yrsday pretham gubbi had visited the veeresh theater to the full house and he was more emotional after checking out the response.. he told the same on the TV show in the morning..and the movie is released only in the veeresh..

  41. Kishor on December 14th, 2009 3:28 pm

    @ Prashanth,
Prashanth, i Watched this Movie yesterday in Veeresha theatere in Magadi Road. Any decent kannada film will become housefull that are playing in any of the three theaters that are in magadi road i.e Veeresha, Prasanna and Pramod.

To my Surprise, only balcony was full yesterday in Veeresha theatre and 2nd class remained half empty.

There is no novelty or new in this movie. Songs are good to hear but on the screen they are not well choreographed.

Yes ganesh acted well but seems to be tried little hard to look cool…….

Sorry to say this, this is not what we are expecting out of this movie. True disappointment.

  42. adarsh on December 14th, 2009 3:23 pm

ha ha ha..i’m laughing at the part which says “…even though his body shows signs of having acquired all the fringe benefits of stardom.” so true..treadmill calling!
@Prashanth A- If this film was given 4.5 stars, i and many others would’ve committed suicide.

Conclusion:Ganesh/preetham gubbi/bollywood reject heroines/rainy films etc help in decreasing population!

PS: Fat, short, ugly and unhealthy are in ansathe:D(yappa)

  43. sharath on December 14th, 2009 1:34 pm

hi hello this movie i s very bad movie and u cant expect any thing new in this please do not get any idea of watching it

  44. sharath on December 14th, 2009 1:33 pm

this movie is very badly narreted please do not have any plans to watch it please watch gokula its a very well made film

  45. Mahesh on December 14th, 2009 12:58 pm

@Prashanth A, looks like modesty prevailed you from saying MJ should have got 5 out of 5 stars ;)

  46. ish on December 14th, 2009 12:49 pm

presently ganesh is the only kannada actor who can make quality movies. mj is a brilliant movie and good treat for the audience. i’m glad that i got to watch a really good film and outstanding songs.

  47. Prashanth A on December 14th, 2009 12:12 pm

    When will the rains stop??

    Y IT WILL NOT STOP…
@ Raju shanbag.. i really doubt whether he got the review correct or not antha..
reasons for that .. till now all the fourty theaters including Multiplex are running full houses , in Mysore there was a lati charge happened due to clash over ticket distribution.. ..
and as far as movie is concern.. the First half with the cirpy jokes from ganesh and others keeps you interested with the beautiful scenary .. hats off to krishna for that .. Gubbi direction is also fuper.. He has improved after haage..
Second half with the emotional scenes and fantastic song of nee jothyealli.. rocks the screen with fantastic visual to eye…
ALL in all it is a very good movie and it truly deserves 4.5/5..

  48. madhu on December 14th, 2009 11:18 am

hello friends, i read all ur comments. even m not a ganesh s fan but according to me this is the best film released in 2009, can enjoy the locations and his timing deliveries. worth to watch, good entertainer.

  49. raju on December 14th, 2009 10:26 am

I walked out of theatre. ONE More FLOP for Ganesh. I wonder how preetham gubbi is a director ? No directing skills, writing skills. KFI needs to improve. Audiences will not support this movie. Same Scrap again.

  50. Gowtham on December 14th, 2009 9:44 am

This movie is not really good.
There is repeatition of dialogues. The movie is very boring.
The only good thing in the movie is its location, good work by the cameraman.
    Music is good.

  51. ramurthy on December 14th, 2009 1:56 am

@^2above-a true/real fan sees talent and expects quality. a mindless goof supports an actor/sportsman blindly. does this makes sense to u? which one do u fit into? and oh, we need real fans for real movies!

  52. @above on December 14th, 2009 1:01 am

Stop pretending like ganesh fan -waht did u say- u are ganesh fan and didnt enjoy any of his films after MM ??/ ohhh ….i am also Sachin tendulkar but didnt enjoy him playing after 1989 debut against pakistan, am also a shivanna fan didnt enjoy any films after aanand
does that make sense to u???

  53. ramurthy on December 14th, 2009 12:40 am

this is the only review which has given appropriate stars for this film. everywhere else they’ve chumma hyped it like crzy..i’m a fan of ganesh but i really never enjoyed any of his films after MM..in maleyali joteyali, as the review says there is overdose of rains..both heroins not good..got bored in the interval..think its bcoz of cliches. anyway i’m not a fan of preetham gubbi dir..hes average.

Got something to say?
