Mussanje Maathu
Movie Review By Raju Shanbhag
Film Ella Maathu!
So you thought radio stations air programs that you could listen whenever you want to and change the channel if the RJ talks without knowing when to stop. Life isn’t that simple, brother. You walk into the theatre to watch Mussanje Maatu and sit with expectations aplenty in your clueless mind. But what unfolds on your miserable soul is a three hour long radio program that drills endlessly about the facts of life. You can’t change the channel; you can’t even walk out because you sheepishly wish there might be something good on offer in the coming reels. And all you get is more preachy dialogues about life.
Mussanje Maatu is a title of a radio program where the RJ consoles people who are in distress (Sorry, the audience are not allowed to call.) Oh yes, this is a radio program and the RJ is supposed to speak, and there will be plenty of speech. But are we watching a movie or ‘watching’ a radio program? Taking Kannada industry’s newfound fascination with radio channels to new heights (It was there in Milana, and Accident too,) the entire story and film Mussanje Maatu revolves around a radio program. There is nothing wrong in that, but the film gets absolutely boring after a while and nobody is interested in whatever happens in the film.
The biggest bane of the film is its dialogues. Everybody mouths philosophical dialogues at the slightest of provocation and they keep belting them out till you plead them to stop. In an age when filmmakers stress on short, crisp dialogues and sometimes absolute silence to get their points across, this film has long, melodramatic dialogues that nobody wants to listen to. Everybody in the film is hurt, and they won’t rest till you join the pack. The mode of torture is endless, monotonous, melodramatic dialogues that keep haunting you even after you leave the theatres; alas, not in the way the director intended.
But hold on, there are few good points to talk about, and believe me, I won’t take half as time as the RJ takes in his radio programs. The film belongs to Sudeep and Sudeep only. His mannerisms, body language and the way he emotes and the way he carries himself in this entire film is worth appreciating. He carries a weak story marred by outdated dialogues on his shoulders in a way that is highly commendable. Good that he is working with some better filmmakers like Ram Gopal Verma.
Ramya does total justice to her role and looks hot in the song Kaddalu Manasanna. She never goes overboard even with such a highly melodramatic script. There is a quiet confidence about her which shows all through the film. Other supporting cast like Ramesh Bhat does just fine in their roles. The film has roped in popular humorists like Pranesh to play comic roles. We all love Pranesh for his authentic north Karnataka dialogues and humor on stage. But film is not a medium where he will be respected if he carries on such roles.
The surprise package of the film is Anu Prabhakar who looks no less beautiful than Ramya and acts well too. Wish our Kannada directors could offer meatier roles for her in the future. Also, the role of the little boy who stays next to Anu Prabhakar’s house, the concept of the character and the way it ends is conveniently lifted from recent Amitabh Bachchan starrer Chini Kum. Needless to say, the original was better.
Veteran cinematographer Sundarnath Suvarna does a neat job in the film. Whenever he gets a chance to get the hell out of Mussanje Maatu studios and capture some beautiful locales, he does a totally commendable job. Even Mahesh’s direction is reasonably good, but he should get the right script and also understand that sometimes, silence is much better than words.
So, are you going to watch the film? We advise you to stay at home and listen to the radio instead. You can at least change the channel if the RJ and company get too melodramatic.
Box Office Verdict: Average(Source: IndiaFM/Sify)

Mussanje Maathu Music Review:
O Hrudaya: Well, you cannot exactly say it’s a copy. But O Hrudaya seems to be heavily inspired by a couple of Hindi songs, especially A. R Rahaman’s “Ey Ajnabi” song from Dil Se. The beats and mood constantly remind you of that song. And the fact that Udit Narayan is the singer in both the songs may just be a funny coincidence! The song is good and you may like it if you are forced to listen to it more than once!
Ninna Nodalento: Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal continue their services to the Kannada film industry at the expense of our local singers; and interestingly enough, they get some really good songs all the time. The tune is melodious and both the singers have rendered it really well. But this song is a direct copy of an old Hindi song, “Zu Zu Zu” from the movie Sanjog(1985). Laxmikant Pyarelal had composed the music for the same.
Mussanje Matali: For the whole of Mussanje Matali song, you will be waiting for the song to ‘really’ start and it never does! It is supposed to be one of those light songs which you listen to in your headphone watching romantically at the sunset, provided you have nothing else to do. Hemanth Kumar has sung the
song well, but the song does not have a repeat value.
Kaddalu Manasanna: The language of this song is strikingly similar to Kannada, and Kunal Ganjawala is carrying on further investigations on this matter. Meanwhile, he belts out a song in his unique style which is likeable. Although the language could have been clearer, these types of songs will strangely get extra value if they are a bit unclear.
Hettavala Muddu Maatu: A lullaby about the greatness of motherhood rendered beautifully by singer Nandita. But sorry, there are too many such songs glorifying the motherhood and they all invariably sound the same.
Enaagali: Did I just say Sonu Nigam always gets the best of songs to sing? Well, I spoke too soon. Even Sonu’s silken voice fails to do anything for this sing. On top of that, Sonu Nigam misses on the correct pronunciation of many words. For god’s sake, if you are paying the man astronomical sums to sing for you, at least have the guts to ask him to sing properly.
Anuraga Aralo: The one thing that strikes about this song, which is sung by Karthik is that one line in the song reminds you of a song from Ravichandran’s Ranadhira. Nothing more to write about this song.
Aakasha Bhoomi: I am taking my words back. After the beautiful Ninna Nodalento, Shreya Goshal gets an ordinary Aakasha Bhoomi, which is neither good, nor bad. The song does not register at all.

I liked this movie very much. I am here is USA. I saw this movie in theater. I get a very rare chance of watching Kannada movie in big screen. I really liked the theme of the story and all songs. Thanks for your review Raju.
One of the finest songs in recent history. Thanks for the music director.
And please people, who are opposing, stay away and don’t comment badly.
These are d songs which can bring u back when u r in a depression.
Hi,………………………..thans for giving a wonderfull film & songs also
Hi Raju,
I commended you for the music review of Payana .
But after reading through your music review of MM, i have to say you cannot judge the songs on the first few times of hearing.
Yes, i had the same feeling that the songs are not up to the mark on first hearing except Ninna Nodalentho.
But somehow, i started liking all the songs except Mussanje mathali and hetthavala…. after a month of buying the CD.
Yes. There are few influences of songs from Hindi, (Enagli.. – Initial beats suggest whole song may be a rip-off of the Tere Bin song. But it is not. Same goes true for Nadheem dheem of Galipata).
Check out the music played in Anuraga aralo..after First Stanza. Mind Blowing ! (Guitar it seems .. not sure).
All those Sonu Bashers about his Kannada pronunciation , Raju is right in saying that it is the duty of the Music Director, Movie director, lyricist’s job to get it right. (Sonu as he is non-Kannadiga may not know the exact pronunciation. But who knows it right , should get it right out of Sonu. You are paying lakhs for a song from Sonu man !)
Also check out Prem’s pronunciation in PYBM’S title track . (Ogade for Hogade and so many others.. and Uccha for Huccha in Nannusire movie song (Singer unknown).
Overall, very good work by V.Shreedhar . Looks very promising.
Sorry, couldn’t keep this short. Had to express ! Thanks !
any one plzz translet the song ninna noDale.ntO.. into english i dun no kannad

lets rock in kannada music. its top music in world
I m kiran gowda, i really liked the song. its fantastic. it touched my heart. no more words. ITS GOOD to Listen.
This weekend I watched two movies,Massanjemaathu and Jaane tu yaa Jaane na … Massanjemaathu is far far better than Jaane tu ….
With average story, Its a good movie with good songs.
Sudeep’s acting is Super, He should continue working on this kind of movies instead of Voilant movies. There are actors in Kannada who are only meant for fighting roles. Sudeep has extra talent he should make use of it. I liked his Role as Pradeep.
Keep it up. All the Best
thank you sir..for the wonderful songs. I am using IE 7 on Vista and the links didn’t work. But they worked with Fierfox 3 on Vista. (info may be useful for other ppl..).
Thanks again for the songs,

MM is the best movie of 2008……… Excellent acting, Music…. However movie could have been even better but still Its the best…. Thanks for Mahesh for taking such daring story.
Somebody said that its Flop..!!! Better go to Triveni and see the crowd…. I saw the movie on sunday…Black ticket worth 110 Rs..!!! that too after 5th week….

One of the best movie in recent time with excellent acting by sudeep and music by sridhar. I went to triveni this sunday 1:30PM it was sold out at 12:45 for 1:30 show great going.
“Mussanje Maathu”, too boring movie… and bigest flop of 2008
“Mussanje Maathu”, flop aagi “Hale Maathu” aaytu.. Innu enu marketing maadidru prayojana illa..
mussanje mathu hrudayada mathu. super movie, songs super. ramya and sudeep super role. people with or who want good feelings should definately watch this movie.the target of every movie should create good feelings in our hearts and it should remain until the end of our life. mussnaje mathu is successfull in creating good feelings in everybody’s hearts. ENJOY.
Mussanje Maathu and Inthi Ninna Preethiya are the biggest disappointments of year 2008. But both these movies excelled in everything except story, and script.
Music, Cinematogrpahy, Publicity, Actor’s performances, the richness in presentation were excellent in both the movies.
But none of it helps when script and story are weak.
Only in case of action thrillers, movies sometimes get away with weak story and weak script. That also is unpredictable. Like in bollywood, Race became a hit, but Tashan flopped.
The songs are very good, I listened to them for the first time and liked it very much, we should appreciate how much kannada songs have made such good progress… and moreover we should not fault for singers, they are excellent and they add more value to kannada songs
“It was so pathetic that I (with my 2 friends kiran and rakesh) walked out in 15 minutes.”

Hi Ajax, Thanks for reporting the dead links. I updated the download links for Anuraaga Aralo & Aakasha bhoomi.
last two songs,, are deleted
Anuraaga Aralo & Aakasha bhoomi
Execellent movie with very good intention…… Only daring producers can do this kind of movie……. Even better after trimming 20 mins. Welldone to sudeep….
Oh ya, forgot to add that music of the movie is really good and the camera work too..
Had lot of expectations from Mussanje maathu as the title itself sounded so romantic. But its anything but that!! The narration is the one of the worst I have ever seen. Except for Anu Prabhakar and Ramesh Bhat, each and every other character irritates with their soul-less performances. Sudeep’s fake body language of an RJ and Ramyas fake girl next door character, Praaneshs PJs, everything about the movie is ridiculous. Almost everyone in the theatre looked so dead bored and some (like us) were having fun ridiculing the preachy dialogues. Cant believe someone can make a movie like this in 2008!! it might have done well 30 yrs back with all the unbearable gyan.
Mussanje Maathu movie already haalu baavili biddide… It’s one of the biggest flops of 2008!
hi there ………..Mussanje maathu …….songs r 2 2 gooood & superb ……& if no .. go 2 helllll (haal bhawige billi)
its really brain storming music from shridhar. waiting for next movie..
keep it up
Mussanjemaathu – the title itself sounds to be romantic. To be frank, the movie can be ranked as
below average(4/10). Not worth to be watched in multiplexes. i would like give justification of my
views on this movie.
Basically, the movie lacks the storyline. Director has lost his focus in creating real emotion
and some of the scenes connectivity is lost. Music is bearable, but one song has been repeated 3 times repeatedly which is annoying. Sudeep looks different and is average. Sudeep has to improve his acting skills. He fails to portray the character as a lover boy. In few scenes he has overacted which is very visible. Ramya was good at her expressions. Comedy was very poor.
Director has completely failed in his direction of the flow of script and the audience felt it
as stretched. I closely observed the audience reaction on the sentiment scenes which was not
touching them and most of the time the audience were having a laugh at some of those scenes. The
climax was not made proper and the audience were feeling uneasy.
In few scenes, the director has made some mistakes, Sudeep and Ramya having conversion on a rock
near the beach….but both of them are residing in Bangalore as per the script.
One song is good. Anu prabhakar was at her best.Movie has a good moral.
Overall, Mussanjemattu could have been made much better. I made a mistake by taking the opinion
of TOI review and watching at PVR.
Friends, Musanjemaathu is not worth for Rs.150/- in PVR..pls give a second thought before u
decide to go..
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE SEEN EVER IN KANNADA INDUSTRY ———–
AFTER SHARUKH IN HINDI – SUDIP IS THE BEST IN INDIAN ACTORS.
KUDOS to you Sudeep ………….
Cheers
Syed
the review was really good man.. i felt the exact same way lol..
mp3 download links are updated and they’re working now.
Thanks for reporting the dead links.
people who havent watched this movie can view online at http://www.vijayrr.blogspot.com
Hi,
I was trying to download the song but the link which takes to the Cooltoad dowqnload page is invalid. You get an error message Sorry, song #354334 does not exist in our database.
Please look into this.
Thank you.
I watched the movie first day, second show with my wife and 6 yr old daughter. For one, itz a movie you can watch with family without needing to feel queasy in your seat. And except for the last 30 minutes –where the director seems to have dragged the scenes and dialogues– the film keeps you engaged. Humour is ok. Both lyrics and music are very good. Hence songs are excellent. Ramya and Anu look good. And hold your attention when they are on screen. Sudeep also has a good screen presence. My honest unbiased opinion is that itz definitely worth a watch.
For people who like watching beautiful people on screen, this is a ‘must watch’ because of Anu, Ramya and Sudeep. For people who judge a film by its songs, this is a ‘must watch’ too since it has many neatly choreographed songs. Only for people who expect to watch a ‘Mungaru Malae’ or Milana kinda movie each time they step into a theatre, this will be mildly disappointing. They may choose to not watch this film.
why should one only watch Ganesh or Sudeep movies to support the kannada movie industry? If u r really serious abt supporting kannada movie industry, watch movies like Baba, Manasugala Maatu Madura, Shivani also.. They’re also kannada movies!! Encourage those movies also na!
but multiplex(Inox) crowd was diametrically opposite of Uma theater crowd.. Almost everybody was frustrated, irritated, bored, throwing jokes on the movie dialogues…etc
Today I had gone to Uma for the morning show. By 10:15, about 70% were filled up in Balcony.
First of all, I sincerely thank all those fellows who told it’s a bad movie…also those ‘walkout’ fellows…since my expectations hit an all time low while going to the movie.
To tell frankly, THIS IS ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING MOVIES I have watched over the past few years or so….
ee picture ista aagodhu lifenalli ondhu hantha reach aagirorge maatra….Maybe the same youth people who told that this movie is crap, bad and all….probably after 10 years if they see the same movie on TV…they will probably strike some chord with the movie…THEN they would have reached that stage…
But right thru the movie I was visibly emotional, choking…..In fact I noticed after the movie some girls, ladies were somewhat emotional, choking while coming out..THEIR FACE TOLD IT…No audience screamed at the screen nor any walkouts…
Kaadtha idhe…kaadtha idhe….kann muchidre…those scenes / characters go by…that ‘darling’ chintu boy…that autodriver ranganna episode…..then that aishwarya girl…especially when they show her fully in the end….that fellow who says he hit his father and unable to show his face….that scene when Ramya says “I”….”Naanu”……”Maduve aagtha idhini” & Sudeep’s scintillating performance after that…..also his performance in the end…..kaadtha idhe…kaadtha idhe….
Gud watchable movie……….nice songz…….
Worst movie of the year 2008! Agree with someone who said that if you really want to suffer for 3 hrs, by all means watch the movie!
You heartless IT People,
Even if you have not suffered at all in your life, please go and watch Mussanje Maatu. In those three hours, you will have a suffering of a lifetime and will beg to come out of the movie hall.
Let the suffering rule!
Please do not go by the reviews of the people who have walked off the movie without watching it full.. They are all people without heart from the IT sector.. If you are a human being with true heart and who has undergone suffering in your life, this movie will be of a healing touch.. Every episode in the movie would touch your heart strings..
If entertainment is your prime goal, then do not watch this movie..
MUSSANJE MAATHU is one of the best films I have watched in my life time..
ENAAGALI MUNDE SAAGU NEE song is enough for you to give complete satisfaction..
nodalontaratara. helalontaratara………
A good movie……with fabullous msg…….wonderfull actin frm SUDEEP, ramya is k, anu is an surprise…….good movie….superb songz……if u r an emotional preson then u ll enjoy d movie than mungar male……V shud appreciate this type of moviez alwayz……JAI KANNADA
“hettavarige hegganaanu muddu” anno haagaaytu ea Sachidanandana kathe! dabba movies gu olle movie andre, kannada industy uddara aagalla, haalagatte..
Yes, Mussanje Maathu posters and publicity was good. This is one good trend in kannada now a days. Publicity and Music, Cinematography, and Choreography are growing rapidly. But the directors(Except Yograj Bhat & Suri), and story-script writers are not growing at that pace. It’ll take time..
We saw the posters of the movie and guessed that it might be gud.
We went to the theatre beating the horrible traffic of blore. Got a gud seat and the movie started..
It was so pathetic that I (with my 2 friends kiran and rakesh) walked out in 15 minutes. Its very slow and very much predictable. Definately sudeep’s worst performance. Anu looks good.Praanesh irritates. All in all a total waste of time.
IF SONU NIGAM MISSES THE PRONOUNCIATION OF THE WORDS THE PERSON WHO SAID THE COMMENT SHOULD SING IT AND SHOW…HE MIGHT BE MISSING SOME WORDS BECAUSE HE IS AN NORTH FELLOW……….BUT OUR KANNADA PEOPLE DON’T KNOW TO SING PROPERLY WAT ABT THAT……..NOT TO THE EXTENT OF SONU NIGAM ALSO….FIRST WE HAVE TO SEE ABT OURSELF AND THEN COMMENT OTHERS………
EVERY1 WATCH MUSSANJE MAATHU……….HEAR THE SONGS………AND…..ENCOURAGE KANNADA FILM INDUSTRY……….
REGARDS
SACHIDANAND
DEAR ALL….
PLZ STOP DISCOURAGING ABOUT THE THE MOVIE……ENCOURAGE KANNADA FILM INDUSTRY……..MUSSANJE MAATHU IS AN WONDERFUL MOVIE………SUDEEP AND RAMYA AWESOME PAIR IN KANNADA FILM INDUSTRY……ALL THE SONGS ARE GOOD…..STOP TELLING THAT ITZ A COPIED FROM OLD HINDI MOVIE OR SONGS RESEMBLE THE OLD HINDI MOVIE…..IF ANY1 TELLS THAT MOVIE IS NOT GOOD THEN GO AND WATCH THE MOVIE ONCE AND THEN DECIDE WHETHER UR FRIEND WAS RIGHT……….!!!!!
“U DON’T DECIDE UR LIFE BY HEARING OTHERS WORDS… SAME AS THAT PLZ DO WATCH THE MOVIE AND THEN DECIDE”……

With regards
Harsha
hi all,
and ofcourse the songs.
movie was way below our expectations, no story whatsoever..the movie seems to be deeply inspired by munnabhai, but fails to impress coz of its thin storyline. comedy is absolute pain in the $#@.. the only saving grace for the movie is our gorgeous RAMYA
ee picturna kashta patti ondu salaa nodbohudhu.songs matthu adhara picturisation bombatagide kanri.

my rating 9 out of 10….. Go and enjoy with wgole family…….
I saw the movie today …(on 16th may/release day)
my review:
very bad movie
poor direction
wasted too many actors.
Many many PJs
character “praanesh” tortures entire movie.
Sudeep and ramya both lost their acting talents …may be they need to come with some new ideas..(stereotype roles).
ramesh bhat and anu prabhakar are good in their cameo roles.
Basically no story to tell here.
Movie is total mix of lage raho munnabhai, milana(radio jockey), and krishna for that cool avatar of anchoring.
Total i will give 1.5 out of 10.
hey keep going the good work done by ganesh and puneet in this new look kannada film industry.
Lo Rajeeva, ninu chikkavaniddaga nimmajji “baavi kappe” kathe ninge heLilla ansutte! Grow up man, grow up!
