No Movie Screenings from January 2010

November 14th, 2009 at 10:22 am

cinema-halls After a short lived fight with multiplex owners, the producers association is now gearing up another fight with all the theatre owners in general. In a meeting held at Sadashivanagar, the producers have decided not to shoot or screen any movie from January 1st if their demands are not met. The non screening of movies also extends to films of other languages too!

So why are the producers upset? For a while now, they have been demanding a percentage share in the earnings of the movie instead of rental system which is in practice now. As of now, producers pay a fixed rent to the theatres, irrespective of the earnings they get from a show. With most of the films in the recent years being the duds they are, these producers are not even able to pay these rents. Most of the films suffer from lack of audience (this writer watched the latest flick Devaru Kotta Thangi with a ‘crowd’ of some 7-8 people on Friday morning show at PVR)

The producers are the ones who make the films and they have every right to demand their share of profit from the film; no second thoughts about it. But if they keep churning out the kind of films we have seen in recent years, even handing over the entire collections to them won’t make up for the losses!

DTH should take advantage of this situation and release more movies from all other langauges in karnataka and get over this local nuisance.
