Pancharangi Movie Review

September 3rd, 2010 at 10:41 pm

BT Rating: ★★½☆☆ (2.5/5)

Y B Monotonous?

Ok, I ask for YB’s forgiveness for using his main theme from his film, but I just couldn’t resist the temptation. You see, without an iota of doubt, this man is among the finest directors in Kannada, and an even better dialogue writer, who weaves magic with words. But familiarity breeds contempt, and YB has started sounding a bit monotonous in the subjects he chooses,

And if we may say so, even in the dialogues he writes.

Pancharangi is not a bad film; in fact the film has a wonderful bunch of dialogues that tickle your funny bones and hit on your head with a philosophical stick, all at the same time. That’s a rare ability to have for a dialogue writer; but unfortunately, it’s not rare at all for us, who have seen similar harangues about a bitch called life before in our lives from YB. We know what YB thinks about life, and we even love the way he expresses it, it’s all very funny. But can we have something different some times for a change sir? Can we?

The film has a detached looking Diganth, unshaven and unkempt, with an eternal smirk permanently pasted on his boyish face. He keeps delivering volumes of monologues whenever he is on screen (and as if that was not enough of a philosophical hara-kiri, YB takes on the role of a narrator every now and then and delivers his short lectures about life). As there nothing much of a story other than a meeting between the families of a prospective bride and groom, more discourses on life follows; and after a while, they get simply boring.

Nidhi Subbaiah

Although there is nothing new in dialogues, they are so witty that you can enjoy the film once just for their sake. Whenever the camera gets freedom from focusing on the mouths of the actors, it captures some stupendous locations brilliantly. YB’s direction is more towards making way for his witty dialogues but some scenes like the one on seashore where Nidhi confesses her love to Diganth are beautifully handled.

It’s tough to look detached in front of a hot Nidhi Subbaih, but Diganth manages to do just that. Needless to say, he has the best dialogues in the film and the boy is growing in confidence in every film. Nidhi Subbaih too gets her share of philosophical dialogues, but philosophy will be the last thing on your mind when you look at some of her outfits in the film. Yet, she manages to look cute.

Anant Nag appears in two scenes and a song, other YB regulars such as Padmaja Rao and Sudha Belavadi are first rate. New entrants to the YB camp such as Sunder Raj make the best of whatever chance they get.

Pancharangi is the next in YB’s series of lectures about life, with some fun and some bore. It’s left to you whether you wanna attend or not.

Nidhi is the only saving grace of the film.. Other than her, every other character is irritating including that of Anantnag. Diganth looks good when his mouth is shut and thank god, his mouth is shut most of the times when Nidhi is around.

good movie…but Bhat has to stop re-doing the same dialogue delivery theme in the movies… time for him to try totally new… from mungaru maleh the dialogue delivery has been the same and looks over-dose now…

Nice movie! The philosophy is awesome. the guys calling the movie YB’s monotonous work, are simply ashmed of their Monotonous life . That is why they call it that way. Just Thonk of it ,Don’t you lead a MONOTONOUS life? (I bet who have called it so are software engineers).Kudos to YB. HE is the first man to bring our boring life on screen. Yes I do agree YB’s background voice is boring. Everything has some flaws afterall! Nidhi is simply superb and Diganth has upheld his cuty naughy face onceagain. I am YB’s and Nidhi’s fan. It’s atleast the best Kannada movie compared to other movies coming to the screens these days.

This movie was a good entertainer. Yes, the dialogues are a bit thick with pop philosophy, but for this is a romantic comedy and not a discourse on Philosophy! YB has overall handled it well without becoming too melodramatic. The storyline is weak and the first half panders around a bit, but picks up pace after the intermission. As many have said here, it’s far better than many other Kannada movies and is definitely worth a watch for some light hearted fun.

Super movie………. i watched it two times….. This film is to Watch in good theaters……… as dialogues and Back ground score is very good…….Ninnaya Nalumeya Song picturatisation and the scenes before after this song is very pleasant…………Camera work is very beautiful in the song Ninnaya nalumeya and Udisuve belakina seereya and the choreography(contemporary) is very different from all language movies..

    Hats off to Yogaraj Bhattru!!!!!!

  10. Sudheer on September 23rd, 2010 12:57 pm

This YB’s one of the worst movie, stay away from it. Luckily i saved some money by not opting for black tickets !

  11. balram on September 23rd, 2010 5:05 am

Movie is good although some dialogues are repeatitive. Songs are the best part of the movie. Nineya Nalume and Lifu ishtene are my favorites and tuned very well. Overall very good album

  12. Hari on September 22nd, 2010 9:00 am

total waste movie, if the director of the movie was other then YB, then Bellitere would have given 1.5 stars or even 1 star. Songs are not good, But Bellitere has given good reviews, basically because of YB and MM. This is typical MM’s style, he not Mano murthy but MonoMurthy, He should retire now from KFI.

  13. Kotur Sampath on September 17th, 2010 3:00 pm

The Tagline ‘Lifu ishtene’ is itself pessimistic. Title suggests colour, variety to look at life, tagline defeats it. The whole film appears like a lean mannequin (thin story line) padded with lot of patch work textile ( like adding irrelevant scenes & characters- Bus owner accompanying the vadhupareekshe team?!?) to pose like a well dressed. However the result is zero. The padding effort is a waste when there is no story to tell. Another blunder in the film is hurried inclusion of a Swamiji character taking tips from recent happenings. Those scenes in the film was frame to frame copy of media coverage.A creative writer/director cannot just repeat word to word ,scence to scene what has just occured around us ,fresh in public mind and being reported by all media with much hype.Creativity is lost when recent events are copied as it is and shown in a powerful mass media of expression like drama/films. YB has totally ignored that film audiences do also read newspaper, watch news in TV and that their memory is not so poor to pay some more money to watch the same in his movie. Creative writer should do lot of homework before he inks his story not just do this sort of cut and paste clumsy job.
Also film is a visual media and as far as possible characters should not narrate incidents orally but the writer/director should tell the story visually using the media effectively. This has not been done in case of the character played by AnantNag leaving behind the scope and contribution of a questionable one. YB should go for a good break & story research before he sits for his next reel narration.

Manasare is an ordinary movie…even Mungaru Male is an average movie..Bhat should direct the films like Bangarada Manushya, Kasturi Nivasa, Nagarahaavu, Sharapanjara, Gejje Pooje, Bilee Hendti, Parasangada Gendetimma, Bangarada Panjara etc., One should not select the Heroines from the other languages. We have to select our Kannada girls for Heroines.

hmmmmm,, little bit change in industry, movie is good. but advt. is little nil, if it done so,,, wil be a nice one….

  16. Girish on September 13th, 2010 9:31 pm

i watched this movie last weekend.. its not tat bad movie as projected by all media.. we can watch it once without any problem.. YB would have reduced the repeated dialogues which sometime irritates to the core.. sometime we miss the good dialogues because of the overdose.. otherwise movie is handled very well and its different from regular kannada movies..

diganth has improved very well in his acting and nidhi steals the show.. hope she will get good chances in kannada and will nor flee away to telugu/tamil industry!!!

@Gandhinagara, When is a movie called hit according to u ??, This movie is running full shows, and has retained all the shows in all the theaters it has released, except loosing 2 shows in Kaveri, isnt it a sign of a hit??

  20. GANDHINAGARA on September 11th, 2010 9:40 am

When movie got bad response YB says movie makes collection of 1.5 crores, its truely false news….Fact is YB now promoting the movie to return his investment…. Pls YB stop ur promotion its all over ur movie already big flop…. Monotonous YB….

  21. Tilak Gowda on September 10th, 2010 5:38 pm

Pancharangi would have got worst reviews and would have been dubbed flop of the year if it had been produced by someone other than Bhattru. Its his goodwill and reputation that made even the reviewers of the film not thrash it badly. Watching the film in INox, in a hall filled 20% made me feel like I was watching a television serial, the film is of that inferior quality.

  22. Sriranga on September 9th, 2010 7:42 pm

The mindset of current audiences and medias are unpredictable, they always go against normal ones.Actualy this movie is primarily targeted to folks coming from far off places and settled in blore and also for those who are not leading normal lives. But still wonder how YB stardom is fast declining despite taking lot of time for single project. The USP is once again dialogues and narration. We need movies for all and not for the ppl mentioned over above.

  23. venki on September 9th, 2010 4:56 pm

Janagalu ishtene. They would had called it a stupid movie if the same was directed other than Y.B.No meangiful story & songs picturezation do not suit the situation.Rating would had been 1.5/5 only for Nidhi Subbaih Performance. What happened Battra.

  24. Santhosh on September 9th, 2010 2:31 pm

Movie is very clean and neatly made… awesome work by YB.. he is definitely a face of trend…i like his simple movies rather than movies reflecting movie serials.. pancharangi is one good movie.. 2 hours will go just like that…you never know.. nice acting and nice voice by nidhi…

Good review! “Y B Monotonus” pun super. According to me, “Pancharangi” was pretty fine albeit with overdose of philosophical funda and weak storyline. This movie is watchable and is 10,00,264 times better than other crap movies coming out these days (or rather these years).

YB did not use the nature, i dont understand why he moved to studio sets for songs, could have used the coastal nature

  30. darshan sreenivas on September 7th, 2010 12:22 pm

common pretty good movie, bachelors will rejoice, married people may repent, a good movie to watch, concentrate on the dialogues you will definitely enjoy, story is always not necessary for a movie its just life experiences and also has good message

  31. appi on September 6th, 2010 9:34 pm

Not up to the expectation……..dull movie…….boring…….no story…….raju talikote is the only factor that makes you sit for 2 hours………Yograj bhat’s background voice is annoying……….title of the movie should have been “Galu GALU”………….

  34. Bharath on September 6th, 2010 2:46 pm

I didnt like movie, we all frnds went together to see before seeing it we just discussed how it could be story goes and how we thought same thing repeated in this movie also so got bored n even nothing special in dialogues too. we frnds discussed like in this movie again hero goes to one place and falls in love thereby story ends!!! thats it………… we can see this same thread in mungarumale(ganesh goes from one place n thr fully he falls in love), Galipata (3 persons goes to one place n they alls in love), Manasare(Diganth goes to Mad hospitol and falls again in love) And in this also Diganth GOES TO ONE PLACE AND FALLS IN BLOODY LOVE, YB dont u hav any other story line in ur mind plz refresh it n give differnet, u cant cheat again n again to kannada audience, just by looking ur dialogues u cant win always, EVEN IF WE GO TO ANY DRAMMA WE CAN HAVE BETTER COMEDY SHADED DIALOGUES, Better give ur best

  35. Gururaj on September 6th, 2010 9:52 am

According to me this movie is a big ‘LET DOWN’. Comedy actors like Mitra, Raju Talikote has nothing to do… Mitra is a wonderful comedian, but wat was the need for him in this movie? there is not even a single comedy dialogue for him.. Raju Talikote has done gr8 job in his little role.. Climax of the movie is the biggest setback..

Looks like YB is overconfident.. I hope he gives more attention to the script rather than over irritating dialogues… Manasaare was way better than Pancharangi… Looking forward to see some good movies from YB.. All the best!!!

  36. phanish on September 5th, 2010 6:10 pm

Dialogues are irritating sometimes. Songs have been wrongly placed. Otherwise an excellent movie.

  37. Siddharth on September 5th, 2010 3:34 pm

I rate 3/5. A gud one YB. But the movie can b compared to Suri’s Junglee.. Tryin to make something out of nothing. Making a movie with the thinnest storyline and importance given to dialogues which tickles u often. Ganesh wud suit the role than Diganth. But i feel YB is struggling to write good scripts.. Its evident with his script going down from MM to GP to MS to PR. Movies are surviving only bcoz of dialogues and gud technical aspects.. YB pls dont take the risk of producin the movies.:(

  38. surya on September 5th, 2010 1:52 pm

Superb movie. I will rate 4/5. I loved this movie more than Gaalipata. It is an unique attempt by yagaraj bhat.
After long time I am commenting in BT. I have amazed by seeing rating given by Raju. I don’t know why he has given that rating.
I will tell u. This movie is going to rock. It will be a huge hit if elder generation also like this movie. I don’t think, as it targets the mistakes of Parents and other aspects like “Jothishya”, “Vaastu” etc.

  39. Nemesis on September 5th, 2010 1:11 pm

Diganth has improved a lot in this movie…. i cant imagine any other hero in that role… \m/

  40. Nemesis on September 5th, 2010 1:08 pm

awesome movie…. i loved it to the core… one of the very intelligent movies…. had lost hope on bhat after watchin gaalipata…. this one turns out to be a classic…

  41. Manasaarefan on September 5th, 2010 12:06 pm

Bhat makes all unhappy.Manasaare was 100 times better movie with sensible story, content and script.Diganth and Nidi are materials for leading actors, lot of missing things in the movie.

  42. Kavya on September 5th, 2010 11:50 am

    Average movie.
There seems to be always bias and inconsistency to certain people.
Bhat has taken nearly one year for this project, but this one is poorer then those who takes 3 months for a single movie.Yes agreed there is philosopy and multidimensions to the script with entertainments in the formof dialogues.Experimention is zero in any form. The reviews of medias and people are always very supportive and monotonous to Bhat and others, but still we are not able to get any real and passionate efforts from them. This is the sorry tale of the KFI.THE RATING IS BIT LIBERAL.

  43. Nithin on September 4th, 2010 10:09 pm

    gud movie. . i would give 3.5/5.
Nidhi Subbaiah steals the show wit her fabulous acting.
    Digant acting is also gud.
cinematography is awesome and dialogues are equally gud.
But i think raju thalikotes dialogue delivery was very fast, it could have been better, if it was bit slow.

  44. BASKAR on September 4th, 2010 10:07 pm

    YBs over cofidence….
    Gaaliata from MM hangover.
PANCHARANI from MANASARE hanover. same kind of movie Diganth is not suitable for hero role better u stop acting now……..
Y YB choose lasy boy concept everytime this was already bored.. n one more “GALU” dialogues was so irritating n meaning less.

  45. Anoop on September 4th, 2010 9:00 pm

Nothing said about nidhi. She has done a great job. The movie is a decent watch. I was able to sit through the songs..

  46. Shiv on September 4th, 2010 6:09 pm

Great movie. Hats off to Bhat for his wonderful narration, dialogs. One should learn how to make the movie so interesting without having a strong story line. It is not an easy job. Bhat has that in his bloods. PANCHARANGI is a MUST WATCH!

  47. K M Gowda on September 4th, 2010 4:02 pm

Its a Laugh riot. Just enjoy to the core. Do not expect a triveni kadambari or karnad screenplay. Its a youthful movie.

U cannot do a mythological movie to put great values. It has to be told in humourous way.
    Bhat does it.

  48. Suraj on September 4th, 2010 1:32 pm

    Everything is NO.

    NO STORY.
    NO ACTING (DIGANTH).
    NO FRESHNESS
    NO ENTERTAINMENT VALUE.
    LOTS OF NO…..

BHATTRE.. WORK HARD ON CONTENT. Dont try to put some comedy scenes and call it a movie. Below Average Movie….

  51. Sumanth on September 4th, 2010 12:21 am

Friday Weekend-galu, kannada picture-galu, 2 thaasu full maja-galu, Bhattru Super-galu, nodi miss madade Pancharangina Neevu-galu… Usual bhattru trademark dialogs-galu, different lyrics-galu..
As mentioned by Raghu movie is definitely worth a watch and full paisa vasool..
If the reviewer is bored of the same philosophy stop writing review we are also bored of ur same type of reviews..
**** definitely for this movie.. Hats off to bhattru!!!

  52. Raghu. R on September 3rd, 2010 11:42 pm

As per me YB had done an excellent Job,,,its worth watching…Everyone should watch it..very few directors have that ability where they explain the life beautifully in movies.YB is one of those Directors..Most of the Dialogues are entertaining and at the same time tells what is life…few people think its lectures or philosophy…but its actual truth..hats off to YB where he communicated in a comedy manner…the way he finishes the movie is excellent…with entertainment he gives the message to the audience which is appreciable…people go for movies for entertainment which is 100 percent available in this movie…we Kannada movie lovers should encourage this type of movies..
