Harikrishna back on track!

Payana Audio(Music) Review By Raju Shanbhag – raju@bellitere.com

After TajMahal, Payana is one album that will evoke positive response from the audience, when viewed in its entirety. Of the seven tracks, four are definitely good; and with good choreography, other songs might catch up soon as well. V. Harikrishna, whose musical talent was almost blurred trying to appease Darshan’s front bench audience, returns up to some extent with this album. This album may not be a path breaker, but it has enough soul in it to charm the audience. Happy listening!

payanaModada Olage: You wouldn’t know whether it’s the silken voice of Sonu Nigam or the captivating tune of V. Harikrishna that strums the nicer feelings in your heart; you will develop an instant liking for Modada Olage song. The lyrics from V. Nagendra Prasad is almost as melodious and as indispensable as a musical instrument that plays quietly in the background and yet, so important for the overall melody of the song. Incurable nitpickers might complain that the inner stanzas of the song are not melodious enough; but boy, this is a nice song!

Manasa Gange: After the breezy melody of Modada Olage, Manasa Gange struggles to keep up to the same standard. Not that the song is bad by any stretch of imagination. But it looks bit of an outsider in the magical world created by Modada Olage. Even though it’s the same combination of harikrishan and Sonu Nigam, the tune lacks the nascent feel of Modada Olage.

Gap Chip: Like the sound made by a little girl with tiny anklets around her feet running around the house in a playful mood, the tune of Gap Chip makes you listen to it repeatedly. The song cannot be explicitly classified as melodious. But who cares when you like the song and know that you can rely on this to perk your mood up when you are looking for that little dose of mischievous inspiration!

Chandira Maduva: Although Jayant Kaikini’s earthy lyrics ooze with the fragrance of this land, the tune of Chandira Maduva has the shadow of Chandani Raat Hai, from Salman Khan’s film Bhagi lingering menacingly in the background. Shaan’s virile voice gives a definite edge to the song; but hell, if a music director can come with such brilliant tunes in the beginning of an album, there is no need to go fishing for inspiration. It lies right within.

payana

Jaare Jaare: After the overflowing melody of the previous four songs, it’s natural to feel that this is just the collection of some disjointed sounds. V. Harikrishna and Vani Harikrishna have provided sensuous tones to make the song peppy. But you will still want to listen to any of the previous songs once again instead of listening to this song.

Ekaantada Mouna: It’s looked as if it was ages before we heard the great SPB exercising his vocal chords. With a voice that soothes unlike anything and with such a god gifted talent, SPB can never go wrong; but Harikrishna can and he does. The song looks hewed at places and although it features a passable tune, it lacks the continuity. If you want to give the benefit of doubt to the music director, maybe the director wanted the song this way.

Luvla Luvla: LN Shastry who gave us some melodious songs shows the rampaging side of his singing talent in this song. As Harikrishna’s rhythmic tune builds the tempo for the song, ably supported by street smart lyrics by V. Nagendra Prasad, LN Shastry makes the most of this opportunity to showcase his versatility. Luvla Luvla does not look like a chartbuster in the first listening, but who knows; an item girl shaking her legs vivaciously to a foot tapping music is known to have strange affects on the viewers!

Ravishankar is not your conventional hero. He may not have chocolate boy looks but he is smart enough in some stills. This is a change form his comedy image on TV. Lets see how it goes. I saw Manasagange song video in youtube. it was just OK. Hopefully other songs have been shot in a better way

Well said man! In your state, any pig, dog, or donkey can become a hero! Other than Sudeep, and Ganesh, everybody else are blessed with pathetic looks!

Another good album wasted on crappy hero and director i guess.

    hi Raju,

Your review matched mine to the core !

I really liked Modada Olage.. for it reminded me Hamsalekha at his peak added with Harikrishna’s versatility. Sonu takes this song to another level !

Next one in my list has to be, Chandira Mooduva.. So soothing !

Manasa and Gup Chup are also almost as good as the previous ones, though the high quality of Modada.. makes me to turn a blind eye on others.

Of the others, i slowly started liking luvla.. for it has got subtle melody.

Jaa re.. is also good. A tapori Harikrishna stamp on it.

Overall, another album to keep Kannada Film Music rocking. Great going Kannada !
