Movie Review By N.Jagadish

Prem-KahaniOverdose of ‘prem’ but no ‘kahani’

Love is eternal but never moves in slow motion, love is blind but it doesn’t count steps while walking and love is dumb but when it talks it never pauses after every word. But Prem Kahani defies all these theories. The film moves in such a slow pace that it would have challenged a snail in a race. The characters talk so slowly that by the time they finish delivering their dialogues, you will get at least three four yawns. And that is the main draw back of the movie. The other drawback is the story, rather the non-existence of it in the entire film!

Prem Kahani is a kichdi of many movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Raja Hindustani…etc. Sandya (Sheela), a rich girl falls in love with a poor guy Manja (Ajay). Her rich dad (Rangayana Raghu) opposes and forces her to marry a wealthy businessman, the drama follows and the movie moves on a same old plot of lovers getting into trouble, meeting some tragedies and blah, blah, blah…… Although the movie has a bit tricky climax, that doesn’t make any impact on the viewers as they are already on the verge of exhaustion.

PremKahani

The movie boasts several well known artists but they are all used below their acting caliber. Ajay performs his role with ease, Sheela looks beautiful and does good job of her role, Rangayana Raghu over acts and also there is no substantial scenes for him to show his acting prowess, Sudha Belavadi is well trained mom by now, Rajesh comes and goes. Other characters have no significance as their roles are not developed well.

The music by Ilayaraja doesn’t leave any impact either since the songs retard the pace of already limping movie.

As for as the director Chandru goes, it seems that he is still riding on the success of Taj Mahal and seems to be on cloud nine from where it appears he wrote the story of Prem Kahani, without looking down. Hope Chandru spares viewers from such cloud nine kahanis in future.

The tricky climax and Hindi title alone can not make a movie good!
