Prithvi Movie Review

April 24th, 2010 at 10:36 am

BT Rating: ★★★½☆ (3.5/5)

Bellary Beauty!

It can be done, isn’t it? Just when KFI keeps dishing out films that insult your intelligence week after week saying ‘Jana Idanne Keltare,’ somebody comes along, grabs that notion by the scruff of its neck, and then shows it’s possible to be creative and realistic within the commercial parameters of an allegedly ‘limited market’ like Kannada.

Jacob Varghese, just in his second outing, has achieved that in Prithvi.

Prithvi looks like Kannada’s answer to the semi realistic films that have been flooding the Hindi film industry of late. On the lines of films like Shool, and Gangajal (not a copy, but the style of narration is similar to such films) Prithvi takes a good hard look at the dusty realities of Bellary mining industry. Set in the dust bowls of Bellary’s austere interiors, the district gets a puritanical IAS officer in Prithvi (few weeks back, he came there as a college student in Raam! Just kidding) who is hell bent on cleaning up the corruption in the district along with its dust. Expectedly, he locks horns with some filthy rich mining lords who do not like what he does and hence, cause the film to run for two and half hours.

What sets Prithvi apart from other “me honest officer, you bad politician’ sagas in Kannada before is its narration. Even with its customary 5 songs, three fights, and one father-son sentiment scene, Prithvi is refreshingly different. For starters, it seems some homework has gone into ground realities of Bellary and the real problems faced by the people over there. And then, Jacob Varghese makes an excellent use of the torrid locations of Bellary to make the film look even more austere. The dust springs up under the scorching sun every time a car moves around in the film, constantly reminding you how dusty the area is.

Since this is a ‘realistic’ film, there are digs taken at the current day political and social scenario in the state. So, the ruling party of the state comes under the wrath of the dialogues writer, so do a group of fans who are trying to build a temple for a deceased actor. Then, there are more indirect references to a popular TV channel (TV “N” is the name of that channel. Bingo, you got it, didn’t you?), a former prime minister who is a sworn son of soil, and a former chief minister who dreamt of turning Bangalore into Singapore by selling liquor in grocery shops, and a infamous Kannada weekly that writes regularly about Papigala Lokadalli and so on.

And then, there is Puneeth. The man slips into the role of a strict IAS officer as effortlessly as a fish takes to the water. His portrayal of that role makes the film that much more believable and it’s a pleasure watching him in the role of a young, idealistic government servant.

Parvati Menon looks pale when compared to her appearance in Milana but she fits the bill. After a long time, Avinash buries his “helpless citizen” look in the dusty pits of Bellary and sports a villainous appearance as the mining lord for a change. Sadhu Kokila’s comedy is unnecessary but good in parts. And then, there are other artists making up the numbers.

So, even with its commercial constraints and ‘limited market’ curse, Kannada film Prithvi is a delightful effort at getting more realistic and yet entertain you for the full length of the film. You can watch the film for Jacob Varghese, who has set a standard which the other senior folks can merrily follow; and for Puneeth Rajkumar who has probably has essayed the best role in his career so far.

Recommended watching!

More than the movie, i have to appraise the critic Mr.Raju Shanbhag. of course, movie is good & yes, you are right in saying that its the best performance of Appu yet.

But whats refreshing is the uninhabited critic style which you write out every week. Keep up the good work. Its been ages since we have had anyone writing without any prejudice.

Prithvi is one of the best movie i have ever seen in recent years. Prithvi is all about illegal mining in Bellary and how an IAS officer fights for peoples survival in dat district. Prithvi team has done their part now our govt. has to take some action on illegal mining. Appu(King of Kannada film industry) looks rocking in the movie, with serious and responsible character, its great to watch Appu with formals and looks cute. Dialouges, Photography is excellent, Music by mani kanth is fantastic my favorite nos. (Hejjegondu Hejje and Ninagende visesha ….) Full credit goes to APPU and John Vergeese for their hard work to make this movie superb. All in all movie is fantastic recommended to watch by all and to encourage this sort of movies. Appu’s one of the best role in his career and for sure this movie be awarded for best actor, best direction, best film, best music of this year. Keep this good team work.

    kannadave sathya kannadave nithya .

dis is a superb movie when compared to all the movies which have released so far in the 2010. puneeth and parvathi acting is so superb, and it can get national or state award, or any artist will get national or state award for the film.

  15. Raj fan on May 5th, 2010 12:47 am

Awesome that Puneeth is taking the initiative in making non-remake and quality films.. I haven’t seen it yet – but from the reviews and comments sounds like a good movie.
Also – heard that the movie was shot in Vishakapatnam, AP and not bellary.. any truth in that?

  16. madhu on May 4th, 2010 1:49 pm

really it stands differ for any other as usual movies like love story, underworld, etc ……no comments on punith’s acting , first time dt m seeing richness in camera work .

in one word i would like to say the film is punithmenia.

Appu who always played fun loving character, in this film he has done incredible job and proved he is a good actor. Villan is also very impressive. Overall it is good movie to watch

very bad film, second half was very boring

  26. vrushchika on April 27th, 2010 11:45 pm

Very good movie by Jacob. Special thanks to Puneeth for essaying a different role, its a good move by him for rebranding himself and kannada film goers shoud wholeheartedly welcome this move. This role of Puneeth is in total contrast to what he made in Raaj and he should be taken this dare step to be someone different. Manikanth has given some really good music. We should be encouraging this kinda movies and suside movies of rowdies and baseless love stories.

IN ONE WORD, PRITHVI IS BRILLIANT, SIMPLY SUPERB PERFORMANCE BY A RESTRAINED PUNEETH AND GREAT DIRECTION. ABRUPT ENDING, BUT A VERY RELALISTICALLY MADE MOVIE, THOUGH VERY SERIOUS MOST TIMES, AND SURELY NOT A RUN OF THE MILL TYPE. HATS OFF TO PUNEETH AND THE CREW FOR GIVING A FABULOUS MOVIE. KEEP IT UP

first half very impressive, but same cannot be said post interval.
gud to c appu doing these sort of roles. casting is perfect.
    once watchable…

Whats the review? do u think this movie going to be a hit? .. As a fan of puneet i don’t think it wil success commercially :( .. this may be the first movie of puneet which may not do good in box office. The concept is great and the dialouges, but where is the entertainment? ..

The two things i liked in the movie is the story they have selected and the dialouges. Still hope it will be a hit :)

  49. appu fan on April 24th, 2010 1:12 pm

First half is super with good pace – 2nd half is pathetic and i dont know what the director had in mind while shooting the climax fight – it looked so funnny – all in all ..bad choice by appu – being a frank and honest fan of apppu – my rating would 2.5 – every credit goes to appu

  50. reshma on April 24th, 2010 12:22 pm

superb movie…..appu looks sooo different…n acting s also superb…..appu always rox
