Raj – The Showman Music Review

Audio Review by Raju Shanbhag

Simplicity Complicated

Puneeth-Rajtheshowman14 If you have to choose one person for the revival of Kannada film industry in the current times, you would undoubtedly opt for music director V. Harikrishna! More than any other heroes or directors, Harikrishna’s musical magic has saved many sinking ships and uplifted the quality of films. For Raj, this man teams up with Prem and Puneeth, both of whom guarantee good music in their films.

In an ideal world, this combination in Raj should have broken all the records in recent years as far as the music is concerned. Although Raj has some beautiful tracks to its credit and will be a chartbuster in the upcoming days, it won’t rewrite the rules of the game as Junglee did. While Harikrishna picked up simple tunes and stayed true to melody in Junglee, he tries different things here in Raj. While sometimes they click, some other times, they spoil even well composed tracks (Kuch Kuch Antide for example).

No doubt, Raj is a good album, but you feel that you were looking for something more.

Maybe, we expected too much!

Hey He Paaroo: Come on Paaroo, tell me how the song is! Well, Harikrishna shows that he is no mug even when it comes to dishing out a foot tapping number with Hey Paaroo. The track has a rhythmic tune and a hunk sounding Tippu as an icing on the cake. Almost an auspicious beginning to the album!

Raj - The Showman

Mutturaj Kallita: This song gives a flashback of many Dr. Raj’s songs. While hardcore Dr. Raj fans may feast on this track, others will have some absolutely hilarious lyrics written by V. Nagendra Prasad to love. Harikrishna’s favorite for such songs, Shankar Mahadevan, neatly does his duty and goes back to Bollywood to compose better tunes!

Poli Ivanu: Shreya Ghosal’s seemingly naïve sound unravels its ‘other side’ with this track which begins with high hopes. Although there are minor hiccups in the middle thanks to an inconsistent tune by Harikrishna, you may like the song after a couple of listening. Until then, enjoy the glossy voice of Shreya Ghosal and some good lyrics by V. Nagendra Prasad.

Kuch Kuch Antide: This song is disturbingly similar to Meenakshi Ninna Kanna Mele from Ravichandran’s Ranadhira in its concept and execution. While Krishna’s charged up voice marches on relentlessly towards some unknown goal, it takes Shreya Ghosal’s soothing vocals to calm the tension down. Again, the song has a touch of melody, but loses its way just when you have begun to like it.

Raja Rani: Remember those songs 1980s in Subhash Ghai’s films? They had fantastic tunes and just when you were ready to add the song to your favorites list, something totally alien to the tune and mood the song walked in from the backdoor and spoiled the mood for the song. Raja Rani suffers from similar problems. The song has a beautiful opening, and then loses its melody midway as Harikrishna introduces too many elements into the song. Still, definitely worth a listen.

Kempa: This again an amalgamation of different songs sung by Dr. Raj and SPB. You have heard them all, and probably liked them all. Nothing new.

Raj Theme: A theme song which gives opportunities for Puneeth fans to whistle n’ dance in front of the screen. Others please standby.

hey guys stop talking nonsense!!!! when v watch the movie the songs will aptly suit them….one more thing- Puneet fans like me dont even care for music, story or even director, v want to see just his acting…HE has an electrifying screen presence which no other Indian actor has. Just bcoz he is the son of Dr.Raj many try to avoid to praise him;they think he is in film industry bcoz of Dr.Raj’s influence which is very unfair!!!! so i request ppl to see him as an actor. Its right time for us to give credits to PUNEET for his wonderful contribution to Kannada film industry

Somebody here talked about Kaaranji. Raj Album rocks. No doubt about it. But a song becomes close to our heart only if its picturized well. Prem knows the art of doing it. These songs will be heard in every corner of karnataka as well as outside the state once the movie is released. Please wait until 31st July

i dont agree with the people…harikrishna has disappointed us a bit…i am a big fan of harikrishna, listening to his music since last couple of years…he has produced some wonderful, original tracks..one to two songs are worth listening…but i was expecting much from harikrishna b’coz he is working with Puneeth for the first time…

  23. Kannadarox on May 5th, 2009 8:34 pm

The album has got exellent songs…… to be specific Hey Hey Paaro is an exellent song will have to c how the visual comes up! and again Poli Ivanu song is also pretty good! other than that all the songs are rocking! the remix is also good! will have to wait and see how Puneeth and team performs! my wishes to the team “Raaj – The showman”.

  24. Yateesh on May 4th, 2009 1:47 pm

Dont ever neglect kannada songs as it’s a huge hit now-a-days not even bollywood, tollywood or collywood can match upto the songs of recent kannada movies and they don’t even hav strength 2 compete with kannada songs.
Can anyone forget mungaru male, milana, junglee, birugali, jogi and nw Raj songs never,no one have produced or composed a song like anisuthide yako indu from mungaru male………………….can anyone forget mungaru male where from 1yr aged baby to 100yr old aged people likes 2 dance for that song…………………beat this dude those who r speaking about kannada songs saying it’s average…………………i love kannada songs………….

  25. Yateesh on May 4th, 2009 1:36 pm

After goin through all d comments i wanna say 1 thing u may say that prem is 4m village background,so wat if u can listen and appreciate the song of beduvenu varavanu 4m jogi y can’t this who ever may say anything about RAJ Album but 1 thinf is 4 sure it will rock and already it’s a blockbuster,u have 2 accept this fact raj wil nt only rock in india but abroad,

i love paru, poli etc and iam crazy about this album!!!!!!!!! prem always rocks………….

  26. narasimha prasad on May 2nd, 2009 11:11 pm

YES ,that’s the tactics adopted by small time actors and directors.Raj vamsha has produced nearly 100 films with 90 % being super hits and all time hits.SO parvathamma has bought 1 crore audio cassetts of janumada jodi,as per ur logic.Dude, milana had houseful run of not just 365 days but 500 days.GG CELEBRATED silver jubilee function at PVR in it’s 18 th week and the film removed the same day.UR LOGIC APPLIES TO UR CRAP ACTORS AND DIRECTORS.NOT FOR RAJ VAMSHA.

  27. Shivanna on May 1st, 2009 10:41 pm

This sales data might be as true as “Super Hit” tag on every kannada movie posters :)
Even if it is true, producers might have bought most of the CD/Cassettes to fake the sales data. Something like 365 days run of Milana movie in PVR.. That way, they are very powerful indeed ;)
The bottomline is that this album definately doesn’t deserve so much sales for sure.

  28. narasimha prasad on May 1st, 2009 9:19 pm

Now that Raj music has sold more thn 10 lakh pieces,in less than 1 month. Ashwini audio is unable to meet the demand for CD’s and cassettes. Most of the stores finding it difficult to answer the music lovers query. At this rate, it will over take the sale of music album of janumada jodi , which sold 1 crore pieces in 1995. That is the power of RAJ VAMSHA.

  29. Govindraju.Y.T. on May 1st, 2009 12:22 am

I hopeful it is lovely hit in 2009.Good music composed by Harikrishna,All songs are good Best of luck to Prem.

I will rate this album with 4 out of 5. Nice songs. All songs are situational songs. Prem again proved that his movies always has a very good music. Raj the show man is releasing in the month of June. Lets wait and watch the magic of Puneeth and Prem.

  32. vijay on April 29th, 2009 3:33 pm

Deekshe, u can go to Kaaranji artricle and praise it, instead of sitting n crying here.

hey,This movie shud have been titled “Prem-The showman”.prem is glorifying himself at all press meets and public shows.Avare showman aagiddare!!Movie na promote maado badalu, hez promoting himself!!The movie was supposed t be relesed on Dr.Rajkumar’s b’day. But,it didn’t.This movie is also following the track of Preethi Yeke Boomi Melide.PYBM was released 1 year after the audio release. That was a dabba movie..Hoping for a good return frm the Raaj-The showman.
    Audience:Prem bega release maadi!!!
    Prem:maadtheeni irla.rajanna na ‘U’ttu ‘A’bbada disa aaglilla andre yenayithu..RakSitan ‘U’ttu ‘A’bbakke maadidrayithu!!

  34. deekshe on April 26th, 2009 8:38 am

I will rate this album 2 out of 5,an average songs.Prem already proved his music taste. His ego may be spoiled the whole album even having V.Harikrishana for the music. One thing it is clearly understood by observing his early movies that we can`t expect a master piece from him apart from the music…& that is not up to the expected level in RAJ.& This is the right time to remember `Kaaranjji` music for it`s freshness, variety song, the chosen writer & literature used for it. Music director Veer Samarth is remrkble.May be that work is not well recognized b`caz it`s not of Puneet

  35. abhi on April 24th, 2009 7:33 pm

prem must be actually ashamed of himself , when a bengali native shreya goshal can pronounce kannada so well , whats his problem ….apart from that harikrishna has done a good job , all songs are good…..

  36. Naveen on April 22nd, 2009 11:53 pm

I understand that Prem is from a village background but it is quite a time since he has got into the films. Directors correct actors but who corrects the Directors? Any actor should be able to polish his language before presenting to the public. Take the case of legendary Shankar Nag who learnt kannada for his first movie. People should think of Dr. Raj who is an icon for all new comers.

  37. sirigannadam galli gallige on April 19th, 2009 8:34 pm

    @sirigannadam gelge
I accept all your comments on the album. I will give reasons for your concern in the comment. As prem from village background, he speaks like villagers. So his pronunciation is like villagers.
We can’t expect every movie and album for class audience, because kannada industry is not only depends on metros like bollywood movies.

  38. sirigannadam gelge on April 19th, 2009 2:02 pm

2 songs sung by shreya are good.. raaja raani song is destroyed by prem’s bad kannada pronunciation. Prem 1st need to learn how to pronounce Ha in kannada. Prem being a kannadiga from Mandya it is shame on u to spoil kannada language. Songs are ok and u like them once u listen them 5-6 times.. I like all the songs sung by Shreya.. like the tune in the middle of Kuch kuch anthide sung by Shreya.. All credit to Shreya for melodious singing.. On the whole Harikrishna has given a good album but it is no way close to the Class he gave in Gaalipata.

  39. Naveen on April 18th, 2009 11:25 pm

The music is good but lyrics are not up to the mark…..V Nagendra Prasad and Prem by himself does not seem to be good lyricists. Having Jayanth Kaikini, Kaviraj, Ram Narayan as the lead lyricists in the KFI VNP should think about reviving his language and give a classic traditional kannada touch to the lyrics….there has been fantastic music my V Harikrishna for Darshan’s movies but they fall less by a huge number because of Nagendra Prasad’s not so pleasing lyrics. Hope he will correct himself in the coming days and adds to kannada’s lyrical culture.

Hi Raju, first of all thanks for your website.. It has very good graphics and news. .
I have only one complaint about you. Why you are reducing yourself to be a anti Raj family? I can guess the reason for that.. Your name only gives the clue for your behavior. I will tell you one thing, so many members tried to pull the legs of Raj family from years, but what they have achieved? nothing :D .. Like that you also can’t achieve anything from that.. My humble request with you, in future I expect the reviews without any prejudice.
All songs are superb.. I bet any one Kuch kuch antide and Raani heluvaagella are the hit songs in the album after the release of the movie.

  46. Raghu on April 7th, 2009 9:39 pm

its a big disappointment for Appu’s fans..but after listening 5-6 times u’ll start liking hey Paaro..
for using Annavru’s name for the movie title, Prem has to make this movie a SUPER DUPER hit

  47. Rakshita Prem on April 4th, 2009 6:16 pm

Nice songs….I like hey paro and poli songs…………………..

  48. santya on April 3rd, 2009 9:42 am

The only song of the Movie i like is Hey He Paaroo, Something Different with many musical instruments used in the song, well lyrics and Music is superb for this song.
Well the Album is ok, not so bad.
    Savaari Songs are better.
    Where is the Savaari Review?.
Listen to Ale Ale, Music is superb for this song.

  49. narasimha prasad on April 1st, 2009 11:26 pm

If there is one individual who has taken KFI to dizzy heights, it’s one & only Puneeth and certainly not Hari Krishna. What happened to ur projected & hyped Junglee film ? only 50 days , that too with all the pushing & pulling.

Review & report objectively without bias and prejudice to any one . Otherwise there will not be any credibility in your reviews, reducing yourself to be anti Dr Raj
    family.

  50. Kumar on April 1st, 2009 9:31 am

Hmmmm….jealous…can’t digest the super duper hit……this music will rock entire world….Harikrishna rockssssssss

Its a very average album……… only Appu could save this movie…………

  53. Prakash on March 31st, 2009 10:45 pm

definately Raj muisc is average , I really appreciate appu’s dance , our talent should be showcased to whole world.

Direcotor’s taste has come down , i dont understand prems mentality , he is losing track of his strength ( ie Music), I was expecting more from V Harkrishna becoz he is composing for punith Raj Kumar. Its not upto the mark as far as Appu/s previous films concerned . Prem should have chosen either RP patnaik or Gurukiran & get best music from them as these music directors has capability to compose for good melody & beats for appu’s great dancing talent

  54. Santosh on March 31st, 2009 2:12 pm

Ms Music Tracker, Well said, its only hype and V. harikrishna is becoming copycat like Gurukiran, Well Music Directors like Arjun and others are better then these people. Josh songs are better then this becuase atleast Vardhan has made efforts to tune original songs and given different music.

  55. Music Tracker on March 31st, 2009 11:42 am

I don’t know why such a hype is being created about this album. Apart from using old songs, Harikrishna has also copied the tunes of some other old songs indirectly for this album. For example, Mutthuraja kalitta saidu bidale is a direct copy of “baare baare kalyana mantapa ke ba”.

Only hardcore Puneeth fans can call this album a classic. It’s average

  56. Gowtham on March 31st, 2009 9:38 am

A superb album. All the songs are excellent.
