Sangam Movie Review By Chandru

sangam Barring Amitabh Bachchan’s movies during the 70-80’s, it’s rare to see a film thrive solely on an actor-power. Sangam is one such rare movie. The direction, the script, the screenplay, the choreography and the cinematography struggle to rise above mediocrity. But its core cast of Ganesh, Rangayana Raghu, Vedhika, and Komal are simply in no mood to let such trivialities spoil the show!

Rather, they rise to the best of their capabilities to transform a movie from TV serial-like quality to a watchable entertainer.

The theme of the movie is an amateurish rip-off from Mungaru Male, but minus the emotional depth, amazing narration, and breathtaking cinematography of Mungaru Male. But perhaps on the positive end, the tiring emotional undertow of Mungaru Male is missing in this movie, which has boded well. A girl falls in love with a boy who happens to be their best family, as well as a childhood friend. But the boy can’t let this affair go on, because of her family’s trust in him. What follows is conflict, drama, two unnecessary (badly shot) fights, a few amazing songs spoiled beyond belief by the choreographer and few comedy sequences by Komal, which are the elements stuffed in this film.

Like most rookies, Ravivarma also fails to understand the fact that words are not the only means to narrate every scene. Some scenes are self-explanatory. For such scenes, only good visuals and a background score can do the trick. But Ravivarma stubbornly narrates everything with the long dialogues (especially at the climax) when viewers would have already known what he wants to say! Just the way teachers stop at nothing when it comes to finish their lines, even when the students have already understood.

Unnecessary dialogues and Shekhar Chandru’s lazy cinematography ensure that the movie looks more like a tele-serial. In fact, in some scenes, make up (the paint) on Vedhika’s face is glaringly visible.

In contrast to the marvelous music by Devi Shri Prasad, the choreography is also a major letdown. It’s very ordinary and does no justice to Devi Shri’s music. The steps are completely out of sync with the music.

But it’s amazing to see how Ganesh carries off his role, despite such a poor screenplay. His screen presence, his small but expressive eyes and dialog delivery are as usual, excellent. He plays his usual altruistic self, helping everyone who comes his way. Komal’s comedy scenes are entertaining, though in no way connected to the main storyline. Rangayana Raghu has been given a good role and performs brilliantly. Vedhika is a sheer pleasure to watch, even when there’s not much scope for acting. But her easy, smiling presence is enough to set the screen on fire. Watch out for the scenes, where her face is a mélange of amazing expressions, as she watches Ganesh admiringly. Simply breathtaking!

Even though, Sangama is an expensive TV serial at best, you won’t feel like crashing out of theatre during any point of time during the movie. Ganesh’s screen presence, Rangayana Raghu’s acting, Vedhika’s beauty, and Komal’s comedy scenes would hold you glued to your seats till the end.

The director had everything – a superstar hero, a very cute heroine, a good comedian, superhit music. But Alas, he had left his brain at home and came up with such a poor script and screenplay that no one can save it.

This show that even if you have a good army, a battle can be lost because of a bad commander and his strategies.l

    Hi All,

Y do u people take all names of Kannada film industry when u r talking about a particular movie? Ganesh has many fans following him and he has the capability of making good films. But after seeing Bombat and Sangama, surely his fans will be disapointed. Coz after films like MM & Galipata, Ganesh should concentrate on the story he choose and not act in any films which offers him good scope.

Sorry Ganesh, being a fan of urs, I am dissapointed from ur Bombat & Sangama.

    Please wake up…….

And all the fans of Kannada, Please stop commenting on eachother n start loving Kannada films. No one can suppress any actor or any film. Please don’t blame one actor or Raj Kumar’s family. He is a legend and no one can touch his limits. His sons are also have d ability to give big hits. A film can’t be a hit just coz its a big banner movie or a leading actor’s movie. If so, we couldn’t have got films like MM & Duniya.

Please stop commenting on each others n support the films which are really good.

dude, after great opening, shivraj & puneet films continue to do good business. in later weeks. That’s the difference between raj & sons and the rest.

To put it in mathematical terms differnce between infinity and zero is exactly what am referring to. u don;t bother as u don;t understand dude.

  16. chombu prasad on October 26th, 2008 12:15 am

    @ prasad…

so after getting those good openings,, all those puneeth’s & shivaraj’s movie went to flop…..

I bet,, if puneeth had acted in this movie,, u wud hav told… its an awesome movie…

ONce in a life time kinda movie antha..

    get a hike,, dude…

see this movie,, with a natural taste,, m sure u r gonna enjoy!!!

Dear chandru, probably u have forgotten the magnetic presence of Dr Raj for nearly 5 decades to be followed by his sons later and now.Even Amitabh had miserable flops, in contrast Dr Raj could dish out continuos hits for 5 decades.

Ganesh is a pathetic actor and all his films boombed.None of his films opened to full houses as copared to puneet and shivaraj.Even mungaru male was screened to empty houses in the first 3-4 weeks.Even his best box office first week collction is only 1 crore compared to over 4 crore of net profit of puneet & shivraj.

Be fair to all movies and prevail or be biased and perish. Decide for yourself.

  18. GOLDY FAN on October 25th, 2008 4:25 pm

Though ganesh acting & songs are good, it doesn’t work due to old remix stories of same gani’s(MM & ARAMANE) & telugu type (gowramma version of telugu!!!)movies. Its again a wasted effort & goldy shouldn’t repeat same movies & SAME image as his movies are losing charm at box office including sangama. Never expected first day running short of audience for gani’s movie.
