Sugreeva Movie Review
(2.5/5) Tathastu for Remakes!
Remember those arithmetic problems we used to solve in our primary schools? It goes something like this; if one guy can do x amount of work in y number of days, how many people will it take to do the same amount of work in z number of days? Producer Anaji Nagaraj and co. decided to find out, and they applied this elementary math in the making of Sugreeva, with 10 directors, 10 cameramen and countless other technicians to create a world record in the shooting time of the movie.
And although we have no clue as to how it helped the final output, we would still like to congratulate team Sugreeva, for this takes a herculean amount of coordination and dedication to create such record.
And now, the sad part. Sugreeva is a remake of 2006 flop Hindi movie, Tathastu starring Sanjay Dutt and Amisha Patel. The makers of Sugreeva have lifted the entire storyline and many sequences of the movie as they are; with subtle changes in characterizations and sequences. Sadly, this has happened with Shivarajkumar as the hero, the last man standing against remakes in KFI. But if you want see some humor in the sadness, eat this. The makers of Tathastu will not complain for not giving them the credit, because even Tathastu was a remake of another flop Hollywood film John Q, starring Denzel Washington.
And we thought only hits were remade!
Sugreeva is the story of a poor father holding the people in a posh hospital to ransom because the hospital refuses to carry out the heart transplant of his only son. Had it been original, the idea was novel, as this type of story is rare to be seen in Kannada. But there are irritants galore in the movie. For example, people who go to watch this movie to escape the boring reality shows on TV beware; as you will be subjected to almost a full episode of Kuniyonu Baara in this movie too!
Shivarajkumar deserves a special mention in Sugreeva. The man is there in almost every frame of the film and it’s not easy to do all that within 18 hours at his age. He exudes the pain of losing his child and his helplessness in saving his only son beautifully; although the gang of directors kill it later with needless dramatization and fights. Yajna Shetty does full justice to her second deglamorized role after Eddelu Manjunatha.
Strangely, the film has not compromised too much because of its unbelievably short shooting time, except the blur of the camera in few places and few changes with respect to Tathasthu to avoid outdoor shooting! But again, this brings us back to the question; how does shooting a film in 18 hours help the quality or even the business of the film. Some may argue that people will throng to the theatres to see the world record breaking film and hence, it will help the business of the film.
In that case, Idu Sadhya should have been a super hit!

Camera work and composition of shots are super than the regular movies. All the Directors have fulfilled their responsibilities well. SRK performed well but during the Hyjack scenes he looks over sentimental. He looks good upto ‘Kuniyona baro’ scene. Yagna shetty’s performance is like the established heroine.
In 18 hours of shooting any World famous Director can not give a Super Hit Film. With the limited time, the whole team performed well. Only thing is that Kannada audiences are reserved to certain types of stories because of that, collection is also dull. But, the Producer’s calculation will be worked out.
If the same movie comes in other South Indian languages, then our Kannada audiences give more mouth publicity and make it to a grand success.
He is ultimate actor with versatile flops and of course easily one of the best in entire India.
Shivanna looks too young and dynamic with loads of energy.He is ultimate versatile actor and easily one of the best in entire India.
He has lots of novel based,orginals,pathbreaking movies.He is next best to Annavrru in movies,versatality. and huge number of megablockbusters.The remake fans must not come to his topic and post like clueless guys.
Shivraj looks horrible,sagged,and too old for his age.He is just a mere star and not at all a ACTOR. His movies has never been any moral messanger unlike his father.
Kannada film industry had only two pillars VISHNU and RAJ. With that pillars collapsed, Industry will only be in bleak and in darkness.The new set of star or guys like shivraj,puneet are mere “worms” and can hardly handle the industry req’s.
This is a good comedy film.

Shivanna is ultimate versatile actor,there are so many instances of heroisms in real life.
This is worst movie i have seen in my life but shivrajkumar acting is good, please don’t compare shivarajkumar with vishnu, vishnu is not only good actor but also a good human being, shivanna and puneeth are hero in film only, but vishnu is hero in both film and real life.

Sugreeva is just inspiration from the hollywood movie,how can we call it a remake.Regarding your regular apprehensions ,the movie is released in more number of centres compared to any other highly hyped, masala movies in recent past.Whether people will throng to the theatre to watch the world record breaking movie is not at all a issue if you are aware of budget ,tv rights,etc.Between Idu Sadya was shot in 48 hours and we all knew about the stuff in it.
Shivanna rocks to the core displaying various emotions in continous 18 hour shoot of the movie.
And also, i found that one Pramod Chakravarthy wrote screenplay. Is he the same Pramod Chakravarthy who acted in Halo Yama, Jiboomba, Akka?? Or is he a different person?
Anybody know if Sugreeva movie will be released in USA? If so, then any idea in which city?

Naanellu “Vishnu yen maadidru sari” anta heLilla… Vishnu hesarannu yettilla… Neene assume maadkonta idyallappa… “Haai Bengloor” and “Lankesh Patrike” tara mansige bandaddu barityalla…. Yes, Vishnu did a string of remakes 2000s (may be starting from “Yajamana”, “Kotigobba”, a bunch of S. Narayan’s stupid movies, “Ekadanta” etc. etc.) and most of them are utter flops as expected out of (most) remake movies. And, “Master” is also a remake and it is also a flop. FYI, I haven’t seen most of these remakes.. The way you are talking lightly of a great actor’s demise (implicitly indicating that “Master” should have become hit due to sympathy) shows that you simply don’t like him for reasons only known to you (and to all “fanboys” of your guru). Anyways, it is digestible to watch Vishnu on screen than SRK or Puneeth.
Inspiration and remakes are poles apart,dont try to view both of them in same ways.
The element of risk in boxoffice is very less and there is zero logic for those who had expected great opening like Jogi for this substance filled family drama.Easily producer will earn nice profit with zero promotions.
Budget of the movie is less then 1.5 crores,according to inside source it will cover up that in 1week itself without failure.Its some proud moment for all Kannada cinegoers about the achievement of 18 hours shoot of the movie.
This is meaningfull and sensible movie dealing with impacts of reality shows and ignorance of society on the importance of “Health Insurance” schemes.I think only retards cannot able to trace out senstiveness of content.

Why should only shivanna act in swamake. Why not vishnuvardhan had done that?. Vishnu has acted in many remake movies. His aptamitra also a remake and Aptarakshaka is a inspiration from aptamitra(so remake). Hope u won’t worry about that because u only see the caste of the actor or the director.

This review is 100% correct. It hit the nail on the head. Movie was OK and was a drag at times, nothing special to write home about. If at all Mr. Anaji Nagaraj wanted to do a record breaking movie, I wonder why he chose to make a remake of flop movies (or “inspired” movie is the word to use nowadays to avoid being attacked
). And, why SRK is acting in a remake movie (apparently remake of flop movies)? Does he want to follow the footsteps of his younger brother Puneeth? Being one of the senior actors in KFI, he should act in meaningful and diverse movies. He could take a cue from Amir Khan (who seem to be the only sensible actor in Bollywood).
I would go and watch “Aptha Rakshaka” again if only I could get the tickets over the counter

did Shivanna not take a OATH that he wont act in remakes ??? this is a Straight lift from JoHN Q and as mentioned Thataastu hindhi movie ..- i went to this movie with high hopes – saying that this movie was shot in 18hrs – yeah this is a unique record – agreed – kudos to the team , but why REMAKE???? was shivannas OATh a FALSE one or is he mis guided???? jeez …movie was just OK – too many directors have kinda spoilt the movie – very normal crowd on the opening day – about 25 % fillled in PVR – which is disapointing
Watched it in PVR. not even 2 rows were full. AR is selling out all shows even in 2nd week and this one is failing to sell even 10 seats.. what a pathetic state to shivrajkumar movie..
