Tamassu Movie Review

June 11th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

BT Rating: ★★½☆☆ (2.5/5)

Good Concept Gone Wrong…

Tamassu Indian film industry often has a queer way of looking at the Hindu-Muslim tensions. Even the genius called Maniratnam couldn’t help but offer filmy solutions to this problem in his film Bombay, where Hindu and Muslims hold hands in a circle in the climax of the film and then sing a song composed by A. R Rahman as a symbol of harmony between the two communities.

If only real life was that simple.

Now, debutant director and established journo Agni Shridhar offers his own viewpoint on the subject through Tamassu; and looking at the film, it’s not hard to see which department suits Agni Shridhar the most. While the writer in the man has come up with a sensitive subject and raised many issues which other filmmakers wouldn’t even touch with a tadpole, the director in him has killed the film with some atrociously acted scenes and some untimely placement of songs.

And that’s sad, because the story of Thamassu is not only sensitive, but also looks at many of the established theories about the police force in a different light. Probably, this is the first film in Kannada which doesn’t glorify encounter cops to the hilt and project them as super human beings. In fact, the film questions the very morality of the trigger happy cops who believe encounter is the only solution to control crime. Also, the story is not biased towards any community and has the guts to admonish both Hindus and Muslims who fight in the name of religion. There are some really well written scenes that have the potential to make Tamassu a good film.

Tamassu

Tamassu is the story of ACP Shankar (Shivrajkumar) who seeks refuge in a Muslim house when the Hindu – Muslim tussle on tannery road spirals out of control. Unfortunately, the people in that house (Nasser and Harshika Poonacha) are the father and sister of a suspected terrorist whom ACP Shankar had killed in an encounter years before. In that one night, the story runs in the flashback mode and ACP Shankar has an opportunity to revisit his entire philosophy in life, including his approach towards his duty.

Good story indeed, but the direction is almost amateurish, which makes the narrative extremely dramatic. Almost every actor including Shivarajkumar go over the top and worst affected in the lot is Harshika Poonacha, who sobs throughout the film but never manages to convince you. The bookish dialogues given to every actor does not help the cause either. Only Nasser seems to hold his horses and doesn’t go overboard. The timing of the songs is another problem in the film and Sharath Lohitashwa’s ‘’dangerous terrorist,’ role competes with Harshika Poonacha’s role for the most unconvincing character in the film.

Sad indeed, because on paper, Tamassu looks like a brilliant subject, which it is. If the direction was as sensible as the story, we might have had a wonderful film on our hands.

Even now, you can give it a try just for the story itself.

Shivanna is real legend of Sandalwood.
In this movie his performance is excellant and natural fromthe eyes of all critics and detractars. He richly deserve National award without any secondthoughts,KFCC, state and central govt should back up well and also crew must see that its been processed properly. The movie must be dubbed to hidhi or enghlish and shown in all countries especialy muslim nations.

Dear Prasanth,ur realy an interesting fanatic.i wonder whether you realy have any love and passion, since most of your comments are destructive and unhealthy in nature.

Dear GREAT S Krishna Murari, u r an interesting specimen.. I’m curious to hear ur expert views on ur GREAT SUPER STAR’s earlier classics like Hodi Maga, DKT, Nanda, and Maadesha…

Dear S Krishna Murari, you’re also no less GREAT ;)
btw, whose caste and color you were talking about???? ;)

Dear (?) bellitere & DEAR FRIENDS, on reading for & against comments of GREAT SUPER STAR Shivarajkumar’s SUPER film TAMASSU in your website, I sent a message praising LEGEND OF LEGENDS, SUPER STAR OF SUPER STARS, Dr. Rajkumar and his 2 sons
Mr.Shivarajkumar & Mr.Puneet Rajkumar. My message was seen in this website yesterday. But, when I opened your website now, my message is not appearing in this site. Since, the message I sent speaks 100% TRUTH, you have not published it, in the name of “moderation”. Then how about the messages of mana (Sathya mattu Nijavannu sullu maaduvavaru manamaryaade illadavaru), niranjan (Sathya mattu Nijada talege hodedu ranjane madabaaradu), Hema (lacks consistency & continuity in telling the truth) and others who have written ‘against’ were published in this website? Their views contain only hatred and false allegations. One Gangadhara writes “Agni Sridhar is fit to be a writer only”. Mr. Gangadhara, who are you? Can you at least write or direct a film? Mr. Agni Sridhar has shown that, he is not only a GREAT WRITER, he is also a GREAT DIRECTOR. You forget about caste, colour, bias, I repeat BIAS, language, state, country and speak about Tamassu, Mr. Agni Sridhar and Mr. Shivarajkumar. You will definitely tell that the film is GOOD, Mr. Agni Sridhar as the director has done excellent job and Mr. Shivarajkumar a GREAT SUPER STAR. Finally, Dear Friends, TRUTH should prevail.

TAMASSU is a brilliant movie dealing with universal problems.Shivanna once again proved his vast versatality ,the inner conflicts in the role have been shown well. There are lot of intellectual elements which are not cup of tea of any ordinary cinegoers.Agni is writer and he has excelled in that but tried his best in his first assignment gaining applause. There are lot of proofs to prove Shivanna’s legendary position in the Industry and there is no point in trying to tell lie for psuedo pleasures.

  7. Manasaarefan on June 27th, 2010 6:01 pm

    @Mana
This is not fair and sensible, Shivanna has largest number of novel based ,orginals and experimental movies.Dont project remake maharaja as legend everyone knows all.We all neutral and true Kannada cinegoers are not ready to accept your strange and illogical comments.Shivanna is true legend and pride of Sandalwood unlike ..

  8. mana on June 27th, 2010 5:12 pm

    @niranjan
Yes Tamassu is a Dubba cinema hyped up by some fanatics. This Shivanna cannot act like legends-rajkumar,vishnuvardhan, ananthnag etc.

  9. niranjan on June 26th, 2010 6:26 pm

If shivaraj kumar was hero in kallara santhe, these ppl would have said the same thing. “socially relevent movie, national award, state award” bullshit. Never trust these guys. First look at the promos, posters and trailers and make up your own mind.
I respect Agni shridhar for Aa Dinagalu, which i have seen twice in theatre. He shouldn’t have directed this.

Coming to the hyped up chigurida kanasu which some ppl are praising here was an average movie with very low production values by parvatamma. Avinash and shivannas ajji are the real heroes of chigurida kanasu. Shivanna was and still is in very bad shape(acting wise). He was never the darling of kannada film lovers and never will be.

“.The movie cannot create revolutions but viewers can have healthy society /relations with altered thought proceses by making them more alert and towards humanbeing.”

There seems to be filmy solution to the problems. This is what socialy relevant movies can offer to the society and create big impacts.Hatts off to the entire crew for such a bold and novel attempt.Shivanna deserves an award at state as well as National levels without failure.

  11. JanardhanRao on June 21st, 2010 6:52 pm

Tamassu is senstive movie, its not regular commercial kind obviously art movie.Amazing that this movie hasbeen released on large scale and movie becoming hit in firstweek itself.Eventhough i am not Shivanna’sfan i liking his inclinations and passions towards these kind of irregular pattern movies andalso about his unique and rare achievements in Sandalwood. There wasgood scope for glorification and exagerations with traditional ways here making scrip[t more fantasy, but crew effort deserve appaluse for not opting to such. The movie cannot create revolutions but viewers can have healthy society /relations with altered thought proceses by making them more alert and towards humanbeing.

  12. Niranjan on June 21st, 2010 3:06 pm

I would have called this a brilliant attempt if the director was not agni shreedhar. But expectations tend to grow bigger with big names. Expecting and waiting for a gem from agni shreedhar as his second movie.

  13. Niranjan on June 21st, 2010 2:59 pm

I think the story had a great potential, but amateurish direction. I have enlisted few scenes which greatly contributes to amateurishness
1)The way Sharath lohitashwa brain washing islam young blood toward terrorism. Its too amateurish.
    2) Some chelas just immediately after getting beaten black and blue by acp shankar going rebellion against their guru (some muslim mla) and beating him with their shoes!!!!!!
    3) MLA getting afraid of shankar’s gun and doing all those absurd things like touching another officer’s feet.
    4) Some diaogues are terribly unrealistic. etc
    5) Conversation and fight near the climax in lohitashwa’s adda, only some two or three of policemen arrives (not even local anti terrorist squads with them)
6)The whole fight between shankar and terrorists is without a single bullet and moreover sharath lohitashwa waits calmly to get caught till shankar beats all the others and neven tries to escape at all, while its their birth right to attempt an escape.

Such movies needs to presented with realistic touch, i had expected a lot from agni shridhar but it seems he need to improve a lot in the direction dept, no doubt he has mastered the art of writing stories. The film arouses interest in each and every one listens to the story in two or three lines, but as a whole the film fails miserably to leave a long lasting impact on the viewers. The songs add ‘insult to the injury’.

TAMASSU is noble attempt.KFI moving in right direction with Prithwi,NNK,TAMASSU and KLS .

  15. Legend on June 19th, 2010 11:57 am

.This movie has shown that creative and realistic elements with social relevance within the confinements of commercial parameters of an allegedly limited market like Kannada are possible.Good attempt movies deserves encouragements but unfortunately we are finding legpulling reviews constantly irrespective of movie merits.

  16. Sandalwood on June 18th, 2010 7:49 pm

Tamassu is without doubht a different genre movie. The concept of the movie is unique and has social relevance ,not oftenly we find experimental movies from all heros which has risk factor and many other things.Shivanna emerges winner and adds one more feather to his big versatile cap.Usualy we find cop roles with routine expressions, body languages in the Indian cinema, but here the role has lot of depth and dimensions and in your face expressions without any exagerrations in characterisations. This movie is certainely strong contender for National award for performance and social awareness .Agni Sridhar has done decent job in his debut job with some flaws here and there.Sandeep chawtha’s background music is good, title song concept is amazing.Overall watchable movie for all classes.

  17. Hema on June 17th, 2010 11:16 pm

TOI gives senseless reviews is a known fact. TOI gives a 4 star to Tamassu , highly appreciated, but honestly I didnt feel it was that great. I really want to appreciate the team, their hardwork & honesty , but I find it difficult to find a valid reason. May be some more home work should have helped. The movie is a package where sometimes you feel great, sometimes, Oh No, sometimes, may be they could have tried better. Worth Appreciating are some flash of brilliance sequences, some good songs, some good literature. Padmapriya- is worth mentioning. She makes a mark even in her scopeless role. Shivanna is good, but lacks consistency & continuity in performance.

  18. Happy on June 17th, 2010 12:57 pm

Tamassu getting universal positive reviews.People seems to be realizing the importances of class movies like this then never before.

  19. VijayaPrasad on June 16th, 2010 7:07 pm

Tamassu is an unusual movie in bridge format..It has a social theme and the narration is sometimes brillant ,sometimes above average.Shivanna is seen in an interesting role,he excels in the role of cop and deserves special accolades for accepting such a complex role . After doing a fine job as a script writer,Agni Sridhar makes a promising start as a directar. The crew must be complimented for highlighting essence of humanity and showcasing the dangers of communalism. The first half is is brisk ,but second half has dragging elements. The entire movie is spread across just 24hours making it special winner.Rerecording is good, but few songs could have been done away with. But still title song and Nodu Baare songs are too good in all ways.Watchable movie for matured audiences.

Tamassu is a sensible movie. Guys really don’t care about the rave reviews.

To us shivanna is a legend already, who cares on the third count. We all enjoyed the movie to the core.
Life is full of thorns, but there is flowers added to the concerned too. As shivanna fans we have to ignore the bullshit@#$@#$#@ commenters and encourage sandalwood.

Atleast we can see a little bit of Dr. Raj in our Shivanna. We have to be happy for that.

I know that chigurida kanasu was made as Swades, Hagalu vesha etc. The credit goes to those writers like Shivarama karanth. My comment is not about the movie, but the acting. There is nothing great about his acting to call him the greatest actor in India. Dr Raj may deserve this not his sons.

  51. Vinod on June 12th, 2010 9:08 am

Oh Gangadhar in that case why Suryakanthi was utter flop???
It was agni sreedhar who made them Direct his own story Aa dinagalu, if Sreedhar had asked you to direct even you would have got the same fame! because it is not an ordinary story also which happened in 80′s wr every mid-aged bangalorean can relate themselves as they saw those characters in real!

  52. gangadhara on June 12th, 2010 6:20 am

Agni Sridhar is fit to be a writer only. He has been hyped for only ‘Aa Dinagalu’ but one should understand that the film was directed by Chaitanya. I get a saying in my mind ‘the work should be done by the person who is supposed to.. then it will be crowned’

  53. Kumar on June 12th, 2010 1:37 am

I liked the movie…But felt Sridhar might have speedup the movie…

But really a social awareness movie.

    Thanks Shivanna
