Thaakath Music Review – A Smooth ride!

(2.5/5) Audio Review by Raju Shanbhag
Just when we thought that Gurukiran had found the true calling in his life and settled in the career being the judge of boring reality shows, the man is back with Thaakath. If we say that Thaakath is among Guru’s best albums till date, it will be blasphemous to his ingenuity as a composer. So let’s say that the album has unmistakable traces of Gurukiran’s brilliance; but there is definitely scope for better work.
Raiyya Rai: At first look, the bus looks hopelessly overcrowded with Gurukiran, Muralimohan, Vasu Dixit (Raghu Dixit’s brother), Rangayana Raghu, Sankethkashi, Chaitra HG, and Shamita Malnad vying for attention using their vocal chords. But the ride is not as bumpy. In fact, you start enjoying the song before you know it. Lyrics by Hrudaya Shiva are just what the conductor ordered!
There is an alleged remix of this song and it’s hard to spot any difference between the original and the remix versions!
Dhoresani Neenu: As Kunal Ganjawala’s sprawling voice fills your senses, you understand that Gurukiran is not taking this album lightly at all. The song looks too sophisticated for the character of a bus cleaner, but we are not the ones to complain as long it’s good. And dude, it’s good!
Alele Savari: Pichalli Srinivas almost sounds like Yakshagana Bhagavatas found in north and south Canara areas of Karnataka. Unfortunately, the song fails to exploit the rich texture of this voice. The track finally looks like an unholy mix of many similar songs from the previous era.
Maare Maara: Although your mind gets ‘frozen’ (that’s the Madonna song from where Gurukiran has been inspired from for this song) listening to the first beats of this song, Gurukiran soon comes on his own with a raunchy number that puts the heat back in the song. The bits and pieces of Frozen haunt you throughout the song, but Gurukiran and Apoorva Sridhar dish out a decent number to help you forget all that.
Kannambaadi: Had the title card not mentioned B. Jayashree, and Vasu Dixit in the singers’ column you would be fooled into believing that B. Jayashree has sung this track in two voices! The song has a good tune and some memorable lyrics by V. Nagendra Prasad.
